I just received the column lock recall notice from GM for our 98 vette, manual tranny. I understand that they just reprogram the PCM for the manual transmission cars? Has anyone had it done? If so have you had any problems since it was done? I haven't had a single problem with the CL since I owned the car, which is two years now. Just concerned that I'll end up with problems if I get it done! What would you do??
I had the original recall done on my 99 about 2 years ago. This recall involved the addition of a relay and a new harness according to the documentation that I received. The latest recall as I understand it, involves reprogramming so that if the column fails to unlock and you attempt to move the vehicle, the fuel shuts off. They are also supposed to check for clearances between the pin and the lockplate. I have not had the second recall done. Like you, I have not had any problems and don't want them messing with my vehicle. I did purchase a CLB in the event I should have a problem, just to be safe.
I also have the 6spd, a 1999 vert. I never had any problems and just recently took in for the recall. I waited while it was being done. No problems yet. It was painless.

They check the alignment of the pin that locks the column and they reprogram the computer. I too had never had a problem with the column locking on my '00, but I installed a CLB anyway. Then I got the recall notice and decided that I wanted to have it done. I took the CLB off, had the dealership do the recall, and then reinstalled the CLB. No problems whatsoever. I did drive it for a few days before I reinstalled the CLB and had no problems.

I just received my recall letter too. My understanding of this latest campaign is that if you have an MN6 - there will be a PCM reprogram and they will check for clearance on the lock pin, and replace as necessary.
Personally - my car has the column lock bypass. I'm tossing the letter in the trash and not having the recall performed. Frankly, the likelihood of me taking a seven year old car into a dealership is fairly remote. Also, I'd rather not allow one of the dealership's outstanding highly trained technicians work on my car (tongue firmly in cheek! )
My advice - go buy a CLB, ignore the recall and fughitaboudit!
