Gm says that FRAM has no check valve and should not be used.
I think you only need a check valve to keep the oil from backflowing if it is not mounted with the base straight down as it is on the Z06. Some engines have the oil filter mounted on the side of the block in a horizontal position so you need the check valve.

I thought the check valve was in case the filter got clogged and allowed the oil to bypass the filter and thus keep flowing?

Check valves prevent or limit back flow & a bypass valve diverts flow. Which would be the case if the filter got clogged, damaged or the oil is thick such as when it is cold.

For the ones who have posted they use the UPF44 Ultraguard Gold.....Which oil filter removal tool have you found to work best? For the ones on the Forum sho have removed the Factory oil filter for the first time...Was your filter extremely tight when trying to remove it? As I found mine to be ? If so, how did you manage to remove it? I had my Z16 up on the Rhino ramps last week...changed the oil, then when I tried to remove the factory filter to install the UPF 44...I had just bought the strap wrench which takes a 1/2" drive ratchet to turn the tubular frame the strap is attached to...but to no avail....Just managed to put a nice dent in the side of the factory filter...so,just left it on for the Winter storage and come Spring...will take it to the dreaded Dealer to attempt in removing it.....Sure would like to know the person responsible at the engine assembly shop who put that one on.......

I use one those bottom fitting oil filter removal tools that fits a 1/2" ratchet. It's formed to fit the bottom grooves of the filter and makes removal very easy.

You can just grab it with slipjoint pliers and crush it when removing it. I don't think the dumpster dude is gonna care.
