I have a buddy who just bought a Z16 2 or 3 months ago and he's been tracking the car almost every week. The car has been reaching very high transmission and oil temps since new but we figured that he was just driving hard. So he purchased a transmission cooler and the Lingenfelter oil cooler. Right now he's at VIR and the oil temps reached 310*!!! The idling oil pressure is now about 20 and only goes up to about 30 at speed. He says he hears "some noises" when he's accelerating hard. Right now we're wondering if he should just drive it home or attempt another track day tomorrow (Sunday). I tend to think he's got a possible problem with an oil pump and maybe more. Any suggestions?? 20 and 30 lbs. oil pressure sounds a bit low to me and I'm worried he might be hearing valve lifters when he's accelerating into higher rpms. But he says it ony happens under full hard on load. HELP!

Those numbers look pretty low to me. My oil pressure on the track is always above 40 psi using AMSOIL Series 2000 20w50 and the lowest I have seen at idle is about 24-25 psi when the oil is 250+ degrees.
After I lost a harmonic balancer which ended up destroying my motor, I put a new motor in and the oil pressure on this one is much higher. 50 psi or better at high rpm and 35 psi at idle hot with the AMSOIL Series 2000 20w50.
I've read that a good rule of thumb is 7 psi per 1000 rpm. Can't confirm how much truth there is to this. But, you are below that.
i know that that pressure concerns people, but i had a ARE built 346 in my last car and it would idle at 15 and only get to 45 at wide open. the car always performed like it should. i was told that it was because of the wider tollerances on the berings. best thing to do is take the oil filter and cut it open carefully and see if there is any larger flakes of metal in the element within the filter. if there is, best thing to do is drop the pan and see if the middle main berings have any wear.
The engine will be replaced under warranty! It hasn't been tore down yet but the consensus is that there is a spun bearing. I'll keep you posted on what exactly happened if we ever get the truth.
So much for getting the "last year of production" instead of the early 97/98 models with "all the bugs". We are told that this is a known issue with the LS6.
