Default Magazine Tests True?

When I look at magazines like Motor Trend and Car and Driver and etc... I noticed they have a few cars like NSX, EVO, and Subaru Impreza STi. The magazines tells that they have around 280hp but run the same time as a 350hp vette. They dont even have half the torque as a vette either, so why do they run the same or faster as 350hp vette?

Horsepower is everything.
Torque, traction and several other items are required for good times.

last I heard it was mostly due to gearing and in the case of AWD- grip (no wheel spin to slow time) with similarly weighted cars launch has a lot to due with it.

Yes awd has a factor but that also kills the power going to the wheels also. My C5 doesn't seem like it has traction problems at all. Are they lighter?

I think those 2 magazines really do not like American cars. Better numbers could be had!

Many factors including AWD. I believe that the weight of a Sti and C5 Coupe is about the same. The Sti has 300 hp and 300 torque. I've run against one from a roll and was dead even to about 90.

Then there's this guy selling his Viper on one of these posts. He has a very fast car but was saying that a Vette would have to make a lot less hp to run the 1/4 as fast as he did.

There's also the Lotus which is so much lighter, it has to produce a lot less horsepower to be relatively close to as quick as our cars.

It's all about the launch (meaning AWD). Look at more than just the 0-? times and 1/4 mile ET. That does not tell the whole story. Look at the 1/4 trap speed. The C6 is at least 10mph faster. This means that the from any rolling speed, the C6 will absolutely destroy one of those cars you mention.

Run what the same? 1/4 Mile, 0-60 mph, slalom, road course, parallel parking? No matter what I see that someone else writes though, there is nothing that comes close to running the same as my vette in the most important "what would you rather drive home at the end of the race" category.

You guys are missing a manufacturers data claim issue. Until late this year, all the Japanese car manufacturers had a gentleman's agreement not to make cars with over 280 HP. They abandoned the agreement years ago, but they all still claimed only 280 HP until late this year. So most of the cars your refer to above are listed at 280 HP, but clearly have more HP than claimed.

C'mon, you're comparing Rice to a Vette?

Here's the deal: You are in a car park (parking lot for the natives on this side of the pond ) - anyway, you are in a car park, and all the cars mentioned are parked next to each other. Which one would you love to own and drive? A Suburu? Really?

I could care less if it ran the 1/4 mile in 9 seconds and out cornered my Vette by 10 seconds at autox - it's not a Corvette - so I don't want it.

I get PermaGrin(TM) driving my Vette, looking at my Vette, parking my Vette, polishing my Vette - even just talking about my Vette.

Plus, speed and handling is merely a factor of money. Invest enough money into any car and it WILL beat another car in whatever criteria you shoose. Think LPE 1000hp Vette, C5R, etc. etc. etc.

Who cares what the Ricers can or cannot do? Bottom line is : would you rather cruise in Rice - or in your Vette?

EG

Is that for a single turbo 4 cyl only? Cuz if not, it was broken at least back in 91 with mitisu's 3kGT VR-4 with 300 HP

i really dont know why you are surprised! the cars you mentioned are def. NOT rice. you guys always make me laugh. if its not a vette then its rice!!

anyways, those cars you listed are decent performers. none of those cars are cheap. the Sti is the cheapest and is close to 30k when all is said and done. the EVO... 45k! sure these cars arent my cup of tea, but they do perform. notice something similar about those 2 cars???? hmmm?? TURBO maybe?? they are getting a lot of power out of these small turbo cars. dont be surprised on the highway if you dont blow them away!

Default rice

you got to admit though having a sewing machine with a fart cannon attached to it running 13s is impressive
but ill take running even a 14 with a deep all american rumble any day over the fart pipe sewing machine

case in point i had an 03 altima with the 3.5 v6 very quick car high to low 14s from the factory had it lowered on 19 wheels nice looking car
everyone liked it including me for a year but v8 rumble and rear wheel drive took over and i traded it in on the vette
something about sliding the *** end of a car sideways just always made me feel good

45k for the evo..maybe you ment for two evos...or is the tax in florida like 40 percent....

the sti is not close to 30k the sti is allmost 33k and the evo starts at like 28k and goes up to 34k....

If I had my way, I'd keep my C5 and get a Subaru as well. Who cares if its rice? Does it go fast? Does it corner well? And is it decently reliable? That's my kinda car.

I still have my 93 Eagle Talon Tsi, which I bought brand new. Its my daily driver. Never had any major problems with it. Best run was 13.6@103. Intake and exhaust mods, and running 16psi of boost (10.5 psi was the factory setting).
