I always thought the tips were stock on our cars, it was hard to imagine looking at the rear end without them for me. It wasn't until I had one of my four come off (they weren't secured with screws at the time, all but one clip had broken away and then the tip came off on the street 
) that I was asking on the forum for a replacement 'stock' tip and I was informed that stock was to have NO tips. 
No doubt a true race car mentality is to take off anything that doesn't add to performance, especially when it's pure bling... but I'm only human... love that look.

I 'think' the newer stock systems came with chrome tips welded on... not sure someone that knows will have to chime in. But at least 97-98 came with stock exhaust that looked just like this...
