Default Body side molding question

I have a black C-5 coupe and was considering removing the body side molding. I have 2 questions, what is the best method of removing them and once removed can you still see where the molding once was?

1) Use fishing line (wear gloves) and "saw" through the adhesive holding the BSM's on, then use 3M adhesive remover to remove the remaining adhesive

2) Use a heat gun or blow dryer to heat up the adhesive and remove the BSM's, also using 3M adhesive remover to remove remaing adhesive

..once removed you should not be able to tell they were there

most folks use the fishing line, hair dryer method..heat the BSM, use the line in a sawing motion.Shouldn't leave any sign after you clean the area ..

Most folks saw them off with fishing line and clean off the left over stickum with Goof Off. Yes you'll be able to see where they were for a while because of paint fade!

Lots of members have done it. Here's a thread that talks about it....

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...olding+removal

My buddy recently did it and had no issues at all. He used the fishing line method and took the glue off with 3M Adhesive remover. there was no indication that there was ever anything there.

You may however, have some fading of the paint around the moldings if the car is a few years old.

Mike,

Before I took delivery of my Z06 I went to the Body Shop Manager's office at a local dealer that sells a high volume of Corvettes. I walked him out into the parking lot next to a C5 that had BSMs on it. I asked him, "How do I get these things off?"

Here is what he told me to do:

1) Using masking tape form a two-inch wide border around the rear most end of the molding.

2) Take a stiff putty knife and lift the rear end of the molding away from the door.

3) With a gloved hand, reach under the end of the BSM and start pulling it away from the door. Continue and walk forward. They will pull off.

4) After you have them removed, roll the excess tape off the door and use alchohol to remove the last of the adhesive.

I did as he said and mine came right off. My car was 18 months old when I purchased it, and after some Zaino, you cannot tell it ever had BSMs.

Go for it!

Merry Christmas everyone

I would think twice about getting a putty knife anywhere near my paint. If you use the fishing line to lift the edge, you can get ahold of it with your hand and slowly pull it off, as those instructions indicate.

I did the exact same thing on my 03 ZO6. Pulled off with ease, used my fingers to roll off the excess tape and cleaned it up with Goo-Gone.
Took a total of 55 minutes from start to finish.

I had started removing them with the fishing line and after a few minutes said the hell with this, takes too long.

Same here - I had removed several sets using the fishing line, and that method also tends to chew up the edge of the BSM. Just grab ahold and pull slowly, and they'll come right off.

Pumba, where did you go Les Stanford? Thats where I bought my car. I've thought about taking mine off but my car is a 1997 so I bet there will be paint fade. What really sucks is I should have just removed them if I was ever going to because I have my car right now at a body shop getting wheeled out.

Mike,

I stopped at Les Stanford and talked to the Body Shop Manager there. He gave me the instructions listed above.

I would recommend that you have them removed. With a light polishing compound you can eliminate any differences in the paint.

Merry Christmas Mike.

Default BSM Eradication - what NOT to do...

<I just copy and pasted this from my old thread a couple of months ago>

BSM Eradication - what NOT to do...

OK.. I removed my Body Side Moundings (BSMs) from my 01 Coupe this weekend and here are the lessons learnt.

Remember, my car is only 5 days old - this is a really big deal to me.

1> The Buddha says "To travel the Path, ask he who went before you"

Members of this forum suggested a hair dryer and dental floss to remove BSMs. Other members suggested fishing line. One member reiterated that you need REALLY strong fishing line to get these off. One member suggested getting a start with strong fishing line and then just 'grabbing them and ripping them off'

I had a heart attack when I read these last two members comments.

But... I should have listened to the last 2 members. Dental floss=waste of time. 20LBS fishing line=waste of time. 40LBS fishing line=waste of time. Hair dryer did not help here.

Eventually, I used gloves and 75LBS fishing line - got them started and - yes - JUST RIPPED THEM OFF with my (gloved) hands!!!

That worked after spending ALL DAY trying to cajole them to gently come off. I stopped playing nice and just ripped them off - and boy, did that feel good after a day of frustration!!

OK - so I got the BSMs off, used the hair dryer to soften the ooze left and then gently rubbed that ooze off inch by painful inch with my fingers so I wouldn't scratch or damage the paint. That took "some little time"

Lesson learn - nothing is as easy as you think it is.

2> Don't let success in one field go to your head.

Next, I thought - why not remove ALL emblems and give the Vette a ultra smooth look?

Note to self - don't do this. Really don't do this. See my pictures here to see why you DO NOT want to do this. Removing the checkered flags emblems is a really stupid thing to do.

Lesson learn - I'm never too old to be stupid.

Here are some Pix of before, during and after - more detailed ones are on my website here
