Hey Guys... wanting to know if anyone else has experienced this or possibly know the cause:
Yesterday evening as I left the parking lot at work the "security" light (which normally blinks when the alarm is set - and lights when initially starting up) in the instrument cluster lit up and remained lit. Everything else functioned normally, no codes, nothing. I stopped in a parking lot, shut everything down and restarted, and this time no light. STRANGE..
mine used to do that occasionally... until I had to have the ignition switch replaced. It hasnt happened since then
I have a feeling that you are going to be having more problems in the future...
Makes sense..... a few weeks ago had problems when I could not even get the key to turn and was stranded 80 miles from home. Called roadside assistance (which is a joke - but thats another story) and the tow driver was able to get it started by "tapping" on the key. Took it in to the dealer and of course they could find nothing wrong.

I fought with it for almost a year. It got to the point where I would come out and turn the key and nothing would happen... the code P1631 would come up and if I waited a few minutes it would fire right up like nothing was ever wrong. Apparently there are 2 tiny wires inside the tumbler that are contacts for the VATS system and they wear out and break. If you know the problem... you can get it fixed pretty easily. I negotiated the part price since I knew what I could get it fro from gmpartsdirect, and I knew what needed to be done. I ended up getting the switch replaced for about $140 including parts and labor. I have heard of other people paying more than twice that.
Hope that helps
send me a quick email or PM if you want and I can see if I can find the invoice at home... I could get you teh part number
My security light used to come on at random - I'd stop the car, restart, and it would go away, for a while anyway.
The dealer offered to replace the ignition switch (non-warranty) and give me two new keys.
Know what it was? It was the "chip" in the key going bad, probably dirty. I just now use my spare key instead and haven't seen this gremlin in two years.

taking all other keys and keychain off of fob worked for a while...
then using the spare key worked for a while...
then cleaning the ignition worked for a while...
then a brand new ignition key worked for a while...
you may be able to go a while like this... mine took about a year from when it started with the same problem you are having to when I had to replace the cylinder.
Same problem here. While driving, the security light would come on after a few minutes. Experimented with just the key and FOB and the problem went away. Switched to my wife's key (aka the spare key :-) and now I don't have to seperate my car keys from the house key.
