I was driving the 03 today, shifted into 5th, at about 45 mph.
The reverse lockout didn't prevent the shifter from moving into the Reverse slot and trying to engage Reverse. Of course, it didn't engage, and I wasn't shifitng agressively, so the gears only barely touched. This is the second time that this has happened in a year and a half.
What is your opinion.
Should I take this problem back to the dealer and take my chances or should I just forget about it, and shift more carefully?
By all means have it fixed. Being an '03, I would assume your car is still in warranty. In spite of what you may read here, there are some good dealer service departments out there. Ask around of people you know for recommendations in your area. Good luck with the fix.
This happened to me twice before I had to have it rebuilt. Then some 80- 100miles after the rebuild it did it again. I have driven sticks 24yrs an I was not aggrevise. It felt like the gate just opened and alowed it to clash with reverse. I was told it was my fault and they would not do another warrentyon it. Total BS.... If it happens again I will remove and rebulid it my self and see if I can improve the spring or de- energize the circuit. I still plan on monitoring the circuit to see if I can find a voltage leak. You have to use ALOT of force to over ride the safety spring and I know I felt the gate open (as if energized) the last time it happened.

P.S. Let me know what you find as I have seen quite a few posts on this lately.
depending on your mileage, you still have some warranty .. that's a satefy issue that i'd have looked at, fast.
I had it happen to me once but I was drunk or something and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't engage fifth so finally I got it to go over and then it went *grind* ... oh shi!t ..guess that explains why that wouldn't work.
