Had my first flat yesterday morning with my Z. There was a huge nail right in the outer corner between the sidewall and tread. Had to use the Z06 tire flat kit to get to work. Worked perfectly, still holding air. My question is though, will repairing this tire take away the Z rating of the tire. I did purchase the supplemental tire/wheel insurance for this car. THe dealer says they have to try and fix the tire first and if they can't they will then replace it. I am going to fight and make sure they replace the tire. It is only 4 months old and like new.
Yes any tire repair negates the speed rating! Also - it sounds like your damage is in a bad area - you will prob have to replace that tire - the sidewall area is subject to a lot of stress, a repair can easily fail in that area!
The DOT rating is removed after the repair no matter what repair was done.
From what I understand it used to be that the rating dropped if the repair was in the treaded area and rating removed if in the sidewall. Now I understand it's removed in either case.
Sidewall repairs where the tread and sidewall come together are totally unsafe and most repair/tire dealer facilities won't even accompllish them.
We need Concrete tires and rubber roads.
With what we pay in taxes the state and county trucks should come equipped with electro magnets to clean up the roads.
We used to clean the runways with magnets when I was in service and only rarely did we have a problem.
if its on the edge of the tread and the sideway i wouldnt push anything. id say get a new tire. thats the weekest part of the tires a plug will slip in with not even 5 pounds or pressure. if its on the tread i'd say patch it or plug it.
Darn... You got a flat too? I always get flats on my tires (other cars including my baby). I still have a nail stuck in RT Rear waiting to be fixed. Good thing is that I have run flats.. :P
As for the nail in your tire, I would fight hard as I can to get it replaced. After all, you bought the insurance for this circumstance, why not use it? Good luck!
The dealer handled this great. My wife had to take the car to the dealer as I am at work. They took one look at it and said, nope, cant be fixed, has to be replaced. Luckily, I had purchased the insurance($199.00) and that paid 100% of the cost of a new tire and installation.
They did say however, that if the puncture had been in the tread that they would have been able to fix it without it losing its speed rating. And they had paperwork to prove that fact. Surprised me!
