Default Adding a heads up display

When I was looking at Vettes I wanted a heads up display. I fell in love with this red Z06 for a great price and couldn't pass it up. The problem is that it has no heads up display.

Is there any way I can have it added?

If so, on a scale of 1 to 10 what would be the 'pain in the *** factor' of doing so?

Any idea about the cost of attemptimg it???

I'm very new to this Corvette thing...

I wouldn't waste the time or the money. Either stick with the 01 w/o the HUD or just trade it in for a 02 or newer and also gain the HP advantage.

Go for it!!!

I just installed a HUD on my 01 Z06. It is pretty easy to install. Your current cluster will support a HUD so all the parts you need will be the HUD projector, projector bezel, HUD control switch, and control switch cable. The control switch cable is not available through GM! There is someone on the Internet selling these cables, I have the pinout if you want to make your own. I bought my HUD on eBay for $250. It included the projector, switch, and cable. I took my time worked on it in the evenings and it only took 2 days. The image looks great on the windshield. Everyone says you need a HUD windshield but mine looks as good as any other I have seen. The old parts book I have shows the same part number for a 2001 and 2002 Z06 windshield. The hardest part of the entire job is getting up enough guts to cut a big hole in a perfectly good Corvette dash!

I have pics of my install if you want to see them.

If, for some reason, you actually do need to get a HUD windshield (don't think you need to), get a HUD windshield for convertible C5. It actually is identical to the 02+ Z06 windshields, thinner glass and all.
The coupe windshields have the built-in radio antenna and use the thicker heavier glass.

I added it to my 01. It's not difficult. There are a couple of DIY websites that take you through it step by step. Do a "search" here and you'll find several. Here's one HUD install.

I could not find the 10 pin harness. You can use the stock harness as a last resort. You will need to add a 3 or 4 extra wires. I went to an electronics supply house and picked up some small crimp on pin sockets some different colored wire. Plug them onto the pins in switch and cluster. Put some silicone around them to make sure they don't come out.

The swicht, bezel and projector are all available at gmparts direct. I'm sure some of the supporting vendors can get them. It's best to try and get the projecter used as it ain't cheap.

There are some interesting methods for fastening the projector listed. I used a self tapping screw with a 1/4" hex head. I marked the hole and and turned the scew with a socket and rachet. Use a lot of presure and it will go pretty quick.

Joshker glued his bezel to the dash. The bezel has 4 posts that are heated and melted to hold it in at the factory. I cut mine short and ran a screw from under the dash into the posts. Just keep this in mind when cutting the dash. The dash is easy to cut with a hand held jig saw.

It's a little blury on my stock windshield. I can't tell when I glance at it and it says 135 as I'm reaching for the brake going into turn 17.

Yes, I'd like very much to see the pics.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm gonna see if I can come across the parts for a reasonable price.

Clean your windshield

Mine was crisp and clear when I added to pace #2...could not tell a difference in mine and the factory installed in my friend's 99/01 coupes...
