My car is a 2001 Coupe with about 55,000 miles, original battery.
When I shut down the car at the airport three days ago the DIC was blank, the HUD was showing speedometer and oil pressure.
Today I got back to O'Hare after a three day trip, the temperature was about 6'F. The car started just fine, no evidence of a low battery. But after startup the DIC showed the odometer reading, and the HUD had added the tachometer to the display.
I was able to reset everything to the normal readings, but I'm wondering what (if anything) this means. The easy answeer would be that low battery voltage somehow caused the settings to change, but the engine sure seemed to crank normally despite the cold temps. So I'm not so sure about a voltage issue. Any ideas? Thanks.
If the battery is dying, the problem should recurr any time it gets cold outside. So I can wait and see if this happens again. Or if I take it in to have the battery tested, how accurate is the testing?
I have seen newspaper articles say that gel batteries like in the '01 tend to last a long time if they make it through the first couple of months. Any experience on that?
