I have a 2000 C5. Recently, what appears to be a squeaky belt sound is coming from my engine. The serpentine belt looks fine. Does anyone know what could be causing this sound. It's driving me crazy and I wish I knew how to fix it my self before going to the dealer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. There is no leaking that I c an see from the car and its actually worse in the morning when I start the car and gets somewhat better after I have driven for a while. There doesn't appear t o be any leaking from the water pump. Thanks in advance
Merry Christmas. You really can't tell if a belt is good by its looks
(maybe if its bad the appearance will so indicate). To determine whether or not the belt is causing the squealing just spray water on it with the car running. If the noise stops you have found the culprit.
temporarily, so it must be the belt , right? Do you think I can hav e anyone switch that out or should I take it to the dealer. Looks as if though we're only talking about one long serpentine belt. Recommendations?

I would recommend a Goodyear Gatorback Belt.
It's an easy job most anybody can do.
You take the tension off the belt, slip it off and install the new one.
I believe there is a diagram under the hood that shows the belt route.
I agree with the gator back - i put a new serpenitne belt on and it started squeeking after a couple of weeks. The gator back is still holding strong.
I thought it was the tensioners, so I replaced them, but it still didn't help.

but can I ask a stupid question. How do you loosen the belt to get it off. And how do you tighten it after the fact. Sorry, I've never done this before
I had a tensioner fail on my '97. The belt was eaten very quickly after that. Maybe there are some squeeky bearings in there? Worthwhile to check it out before you get stranded.
