Default Tire -Size ?

I have an '01 vert - stock chrome spoke wheels. Can't afford new wheels right now - but I need new tires. I currently have 30K on the original set - Goodyear Eagle F1 - 245/45/17 - front and 275/40/18 - rear.

First of all I do not know what the numbers mean - other than 17" on the front and 18" on the rear. What are the other numbers ?

I was looking at THe Tire Rack - Can I put - Z06 tires on my existing chrome stock spoke wheels ? ie...265/40/17 - front and 295/35/18 - rear ? First explain ther numbers.

Thanks,
Dennis

For example, 275/40/18's on the rear - as you know the 18 is the diameter of the wheel (18 inches).

The 275 is the width of the tire in MM, so in this case - 275 milimeters wide (note that 24.5mm = 1 inch)

The 40 is the sidewall aspect ration of the tread width - in this case 40% of the 275mm tire width or 110mm.

You can safely use a slightly wider tire on the C5 stock wheel but I am no expert - I would not go much wider than a 285 or 295.

Yes you can run the z06 tires on your stock rims, it will have a little bit of bubble on the sidewalls, which IMO looks great and helps protect the rims a little bit.

Just to toss in here since i see you're not looking for run flats, and you dont' seemingly abuse youre tires too much to make 30,000 miles on them....I am running the Kumho tires i paid 550 dollars <stock sizes> deliever from tire rack, I am extremely happy with them, and plan on buying another set.

Using your stock fronts (245/45-17) as an example:
245 = 245mm width
/45 = 45% as tall (sidewall) as the width
-17 = 17" rim OD

Plug some numbers into these tire calculators and you will very quickly get the idea:
http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp
http://www.discounttire.com/dtc/broc...o/tireMath.jsp

According to the above mentioned calculators, Z06 tires on stock C5 rims (8.5" & 9.5") would be a problem.
