Default Somewhat Disturbing

Ok, this is the second time this has happened sinced I owned my vette. I have had it a little under a year, so I find this quite odd that it would happen to me twice. Yesterday I was cruising on the freeway at the legal speed limit, when I passed a car that looked like a state trooper. No problem, he went to the far right lane (4 lane in one direction) and I was in the left lane. About 15 seconds later I looked up in my rear view mirror and saw him on my tail...CLOSE!!! He was so close that I couldn't see his headlights! I saw him calling me in which isn't a problem. My record is squeaky clean (probably cleaner than his!) My main concern is that he was driving so close!

The first time a police officer was on my tail was when I was driving through a small town. I'm sure they don't get too many if any C5's out there, but still. He whipped his car around and drove up behind me, and he too was so close I could not see his headlights! He called me in also. I was doing the speed limit there too (although it was quite slow).

In both instances, they never turned on their lights or pulled me over. Both just backed off and went by their merry way. It does make me nervous that they were both driving so close. If I was driving ANY other one of my cars, I would have been very tempted on slamming my brakes and having them try explaining that to their chief!! But it is not an option in my vette. I also couldn't brake because I had a passenger in the car on both instances. I am just wondering if this is something that other vette owners deal with. I think both officers were just jealous because they didn't own a vette! I don't mind if they were just checking to make sure the car wasn't stolen (I hope that is all that it was). If MY vette was stolen, I would want them to check every vette out there! I just didn't like the fact that they were driving so dang close. I have owned a sports car ever since I had a license, and never dealt with officers driving so close. I have been picked on a few times by officers in the past, but they never put me, my passenger or themselves in danger like that.

On a good note though, I installed some slotted rotors and ceramics today!

haven't had this problem yet with the police, but damned if every J/A doesnt pull up so close at lights. I think they like looking inside through the hatch window.

BTW - this is the C4 section, if your in a C5 check out their genral board.

Welcome to the forum.

They were doing one of two things.

1). Checking out the car. C5s are very nice to look at, IMO, and it wouldn't surprise me to see an LEO just trying to get a close-up look.

2). Tailgating you so that you would speed up and they can get you for speeding. If you are unfazed and don't speed up, they'll just go on to the next car.

I've seen both happen, but I'd guess it was #2.

Dangit, I could have sworn I chose the C5 section! Thanks, but I guess it doesn't matter too much since it really doesn't have too much since I think it has more to do with the type of officers than the type of car. And thanks. I'll probably post in the C5 section also though. Thanks for the welcome.

I think you might have hit it right on the head, because I really, really, really wanted to dust them so bad, I was about to explode, but I didn't!

IMO, you are reading too much into it. It never happened to me, prob a coincident.

BTW,That did happen to a co-worker of mine. The cop was harrassing him on his way home from work, stopped him once, and tailgated him a few times.
He slammed on the brakes [like you mentioned], the cop swirved almost into a ditch, he then stopped my friend, who swore a racoon had just crossed the road, and he was unaware the cop was behind him.
But this 'cop' had it out for him.

Now, my friend hates cars and drives an old beat-up Buick, so the cop thought he was fair game, no money for defense lawyers.

After, the cop did some simple research, and found out my freind owns in a $800K plus house on exclusive lagoon property.
Surprise , now the cop caught up to him one day and tried to make freinds with him.

They weren't being dicks, most states have a law about driving on the right and passing on the left. In NJ, you are only allowed in the left lane to make a left turn or to pass someone.

I've seen it a million times, people driving in the left lane, a cop comes up behind them, flashes the high beams and the guy refuses to move over, so he gets pulled over and gets ticketed.

Bottom line, you may have not been speeding, but you may have been breaking the law.

At least that's the way it is in NJ.

Hey man, I used to own a highly modified Fiat Bertone, which are rarely seen on the roads. I even had my front end replced with a mitsubishi mirage so it looked like nothing else on the road.. I got pulled over by a DPS officer in Lacey-Lakeview (a nasty suburb of Waco,TX)... I was thinking to myself , "great, WHAT DID I DO NOW?!??!" .... I was thinking....hmmm, Tint was illegal, so that would be a good reason, hmm I have a monitor on my center console, also illegal in Texas, vechile was way too low - also a violation in Texas...oh crap, forgot to put the front license plate on again......WHAT was I going to be pulled over this time for?!?!?

The DPS officer came up to my window and said "Hey, what kind of car is this? its neat! " .... My jaw just dropped.

So weird things do happen, and sometimes has nothing to do with you breaking the law any.

Yes, you are correct, it is illegal in some states, but it is not against the law in Missouri or Kansas.

Around here it seems the officers pay more attention to foreign hodrods It seems to me people like to stop close and tailgate more when I'm in the Vette It's rather alarming, so I try to ignore them even when they are on the phone and drinking a latte or reading

I've had cops do this a couple times to me in my Z28 .

I probably deserved it the one time, 'cause I was speeding a little:o, but it's 'cause traffic was barely doing the speed limit in the fast lane!? But yeah, that time when the cop was pulling me over, I didn't even realize it at first.....all I saw was a solid white mass in my rearview.....I couldn't see either his headlights, or even the lights on the roof!? And, knowing that my car could surely out-brake the cop car, I had to slow down "slowly" so that he wouldn't hit me, 'cause he tail-gated the whole time until we stopped.

I got pulled over another time though by a 30's~"ish" cop and a late 20's female cop, and the guy just reamed me out for nothing, threatening to charge me with careless, and lectured me about being a 20-year-old "hot-shot" in a "fancy sports-car". I hadn't done anything, and he let me go, I'm sure he was just jealous about the car and was flexing some "authoritive muscle" in front of the hot young chick cop. What an a$$h0le.

The LEO was probably surprised to see one still running Having owned three X1/9s and one 124 Spyder, I feel I can say that without you feeling you are being flamed. Fix It Again Tony !
