Community service? Put his sorry butt in jail! He broke into someone house and stole stuff.
The foks that have said that the proposal that his Dad has made is understandable but so very wrong, he needs help and this is not the way to get it. He needs to be told that he must go into a rehab program or go to jail, period. That is the only way to help him. It won't make what he did right but it will help him. The sad thing is that if he doesn't want the help it won't do him any good.
This guy needs help, and need to be held responsible. Please don't let him get away with this. Like others have said, you'll be doing him no favors. Otherwise this incident will only be a "cool" story he tells to his druggie friends.
He gave up his rights to his "college years" when he decided to get into breaking and entering, burglary, and grand theft auto. These are felonies - not just inconveniences and letting him off the hook only reinforces his doing it again.
I'd want jail time for this criminal and repayment as part of his probation sentencing so that if he doesn't - he goes back to jail.
Go Away! Just think how much more you would have been pissed if you had earned the money for the Vette and the plasma TV. Why not just ask Daddy to kiss it and make it better?
A drug addicted, grand theft auto, breaking and entering college student? I bet he does not finish 2 quarters.
OMG! I just realized I am out of town for 2 weeks!

The only way I'd let this go is for a BN trade in. I would sell my car in a heartbeat if a drug addict drove it for 3000 miles.
Throw his butt in jail. That's the only way he will ever go straight, if he ever does. His problem is that his daddy has saved his butt to many times before. Crap like this just burns my azz.
Not doing the dirtbag any favors by letting Dad smooth it over. This fix is only temporary. Charges should be filed, and at the minimum ordered into drug rehab, and then supervised probation wherein he would have to meet with his probation/parole officer and submit to random drug testing. This or go to jail - directly to jail - do not pass go - do not collect 200 dollars...... where he would certainly become someones bitch.

Who's car is it - yours or your father's? If it is yours, then why let your father work this out with his father? I agree with most everyone here, let this P.O.S. scumbag sit in jail and become somebody's girlfriend. Who gives a rat's azz if he straightens out or not, when did you become his keeper? Sounds like his daddy hasn't done that great a job keeping him on the straight and narrow up to now.
But whatever you decide whether it's let your father and his father "work it out", blah,blah,blah......I would give this guy the biggest azz kicking anyone has ever seen - and if you can't do it, have daddy hire someone - ME!
