Default Question about Side Mirrors, Help!

Can just the glass in the side mirror be replaced or am I going to have to buy the whole thing, housing and all?!?!?

Some idiot, for whatever reason, smacked, hit, or punched my side mirror and shattered the glass. I could see the smear of his hand print on the glass as it did not fall out and there was no damage or scratches to the housing as there would be with a car hitting it. The housing was spun around to the outside from the impact and this is what I noticed when I walked up to the car.

I know that with the C4's you can replace the trunions that the glass is attached to and am hoping these are similar. This couldn't have come at a worse time for me and any help would be appreciated as to approximate price of parts and procedure for replacement.

Thanks,
Mike.

Which side?

What year?

You you have the auto dimming mirror?

If you do the drivers side is also auto dimming, and heated.

Also, check with your insurance company. I believe vandalism is covered under the Comprehensive portion. Hopefully you have zero deductible.

If you can get just the glass, you may be able to replace it without taking the mirror off the car

Some people suck. Good luck on the replacement. Hopefully you can have it replaced under your insurance.

Related story - my wife damaged the passenger side rear view mirrow (no damage to any other part of the car) on her 2004 Cadillac SLS - $562 to fix. Seems that when the Caddy is in reverse the passenger side rear mirror tilts way down so you can see the street curb (presumably to aid in parallel parking in the city), but it tilts so far down you can't see the light post that is going to take the whole mirror off as you back up.

Another stupid GM "feature" that provides no benefit.

Any glass shop should be able to cut a new mirror for you. I have replaced them that way on 1978 Datsun Z, VW bug, 1955 TBird ect...

If you do not want to take that route, I have replaced the entire mirror on my 1998 pickup from Town Buick Williamsville NY I do not have the number handy but his prices were 1/2 of the local dealer, do not know how he did it? The guy I spoke to was John. Area code is 716

Thanks everyone for all of the replies.

It's a '99 1SB coupe. No electrochromatic mirrors, but I believe that they are heated.

Yes, I get really upset when people are careless or intentionally damage someone else's property. I know that I try to be even more careful with other peoples stuff than I am with my own out of respect. To prevent inflicting just the kind of feelings I am experiencing right now. I guess the key word is respect. Way too little of that commodity in society today, oh well, what'cha gonna do?!?!

I have a really good dealer here locally (60 miles away) that specializes in Vettes. I guess I'll call them today and find out how bad the news is. Yeah, insurance will cover it but there's still the $100 deductible that I'll be out on my end. Just tends to **** a guy right the hell off, you know?!?!?!?

Thanks again.
Later,
Mike.

That sux Mike - sorry to hear about it. I would think a call to a competent glass shop should answer whether or not you can replace just the glass. If not then I'd look for a used one in your color. Once you get it fixed you can head out this way for some Doctor!!!

Thanks Walt, see you later.

Check with Autozone. They have replacement mirrors, just the glass that you simply apply 2-sided tape (provided) to, after you have removed the old glass, and press into place.
Even includes the "Objects man appear etc. etc." for the pass side.

Regards.

Jim

Check with your insurance company. Although you have a $100.00 deductible, insurers generally have great arrangements with vendors. They may be able to turn you on to a glass company that can help you out, with a minimal amount of cash out. Good Luck

Yes, not hard, but the jack screw alignment can be tricky. Also, recommend wearing heavy gloves just in case.
Send an email to whitec5vette@aol.com and I'll be happy to forward you the procedure.
