This afternoon I noticed a whining noise behind me. I have not heard it before and my car has right at 50,000 miles. Am I right to assume it’s the fuel pump and is it getting ready to crap out? Thanks
When I don't have my dog with me. He whines all the time, I notice it.
Have 58K on it and it's been doin it since I bought it.
Can't really notice it at anywhere above idle due to the pipes.
It's an 01 A4 coupe. Today is the first time I've heard it and only when stopped.I seem to remember some other post about it so I did a search but came up with nothing.
Just wondering if I should be concerned.
Thanks

Easy to diagnose, remove the fuel fill cap, put your ear NEAR it, not in it and have someone turn the key to the On position, no need to start the engine. Fuel pump will run for one-to-two seconds then shut off. Or, you can do this sitting in the car with the radio off.
If you start the vehicle, needless to say the fuel pump will continue to run. The PCM is programmed to turn on the fuel pump for one-to-two seconds when the key is turned to On to pressurize the system. If it sees no RPM (over 400 I believe), it shuts off the fuel pump for safety.
My '97 had that noise from about 25k miles up to about 38k miles when I sold it. Never crapped out but was annoying until I was told what it was. After that it didn't bother me that much.
Sounds like the fuel pump to me too. I have a '97 and this was a known problem for us so the forum helped me identify it right away. I can't say on your's if it is a sign of a pending failure but my car had at 28,000 miles when I took over ownership and still has it at 53,000 currently and still going strong.
A dirty fuel filter can make the pump work harder which generates more noise. I had a Dynasty that did this for a year and when the fuel filter was changed the pump noise went away.
