[Z06] Metal crinkle noise
I finally got tired of hearing the noise, so I took it in to the dealership last week for them to figure it out. A mechanic rode with me and heard it too, mostly under braking. Then he took the wheel for some testing of his own, and I swelled stuff I didn't before (heating up the cluth as part of his elimination process). The car even did the noise while braking with the engine turned off. He thought at the time it was something in the dash/console. The called me to say they would have to keep the car longer and told me to keep the free rental, no problem with me. The next day the they call me to say they found the problem : the torque tube (driveshaft). They have ordered a new one from Lansing MI, and will install it when they get it (any day now). Fine with me. I asked if I had anything to do with it as a driver and they said no, it's just "one of those things". The garage though it would be a safer to replace the part. Anyway, no cost since this is under warranty they say.
Still, I wonder: A driveshaft does not have much in moving part (aside from itself), so what can cause the noise during braking (or strong acceleration). Does something come loose inside and rattle in the tube ?
