I'm driving mine right now under these same conditions and all is well....never locks and I clear the msg on the DIC everytime I start it up....too lazy to pull fuse 25 to reset it. You didn't mention whether you have and A4 or a MN6. If the previous owner had the recall done and you have an A4, you might not even have a column lock anymore and the BCM is just confused. It it were me, I'd drive it that way and reset the BCM and monitor after I got home. Good luck.

If it's unlocked...and stays unlocked after shutting it off and pulling the key out, you can still drive it without fear.
I drove mine like that for about a year that way and enjoyed the fact the column never locked (other than having to reset the message at startup).
To fix it, go in the fusebox under the passenger floor, pull fuse #25, wait a minute, and reinsert it. That will reset the BCM and all should be back to normal.
I would go ahead and call THUNDERRACING and order the bypass for 50 bucks and do that. I have read to many threads about dealers doing more harm than good on our rides. Meaning, crub rash on wheels, dents that werent there and paint being sratched. I just don't want to deal with that, so I paid the 50 and was done with it. Great price for a hassel and a irritiating pinging noise that your car makes when something is not right.

Just wanted to update ya'll.....I drove it home and the next morning did as Y2Kvert4me said and pulled fuse # 25. everything reset, and the message went away...... Thanks Y2K.....all is right with the world again.....
The only thing is that it could happen again. Do a search on the column lock and you'll find out more than you ever wanted to know about the situation. If your column locks when you take the key out then you want to disable it so that it never locks unexpectedly. This requires a column lock bypass or Harness K. Once either of these are installed your steering wheel will never lock again. Big thing is that it will never lock unexpectedly. Hope that all made sense.
