I am new to Corvette Forum and just purchased a FRC Tourch Red 1999 vette from a Doctor in Newport Beach, CA with 30,000 miles. This car still smells new and the man hardly never used it. From reading all the Threads it seems like the 99 FRC is truley a nice design and becoming more popular - glad I scored. Well enough of that - just so excited about owning a C5 - should have bought one years ago. Still love my C3 Mulsanne Blue Coup - original 54,000 miles in mint condition - total different ride.
My question has to do with the Column Lock Bypass kit. After reading all these threads pertaining this problem I am convinced to take care of before a nightmare happens. Where do I go to purchase one and are they hard to put in or does a dealer have to do it. Also I assume the steering wheel nevers locks again - what does this actually do - please advice. Any installation advice.
You can check with Thunder Racing (supporting vendor listed to the left on the forum homepage). The following is a link for the install. It is very easy to do, maybe 15-30 minutes depending on your skill level.
Congrats and welcome. You may have received a recall notice about this "problem", but I'd go with the by-pass kit as mentioned. It's not too hard to install, but it did take me about an hour....but I took my time.

I got mine from Thunder Racing - fast service and a good price. It is not hard to put in - just follow the directions in the link mph1972 provided. That's the same source for the install I used.
How does a CLB work? The first part of the install is to use an adapter to retract the locking pin. Once this is done then you install the CLB which basically prevents any voltage from getting to the locking motor ever again, which keeps it in the retracted position. Simple!
Installation is not too hard - you do have to remove some interior panels, or at least open them up enough to fit the CLB in there and to make the necessary electical connections. I would guess that most people get them installed in an hour or so.
