i keep getting notices from GM about the column lock repair needed on my car....i have installed the after market CLB and was wondering what if any ramifications there can be with GM or my insurance company if something happens and it is found out that the recall repair was not done by GM
My notice came with a form to fill out if you had already corrected the problem. I sent the form in with a copy of my receipt for the CLB I bought from Corvettes of Houston. I got a check in the mail from GM for the full amount.

I guess GM could have something to say if you fail to get the recall done and that item causes damage. I went ahead and got the recall performed, but also have the CLB on the car. As far as your insurance company, don't know. Speak with your agent.
I am trying to get a campaign going to force GM to recall all C-5's with manuals transmissions. This can only be done if all C-5 owners will sit down and spend a few minutes filing a complaint with the NHTSA and in addition to that request that they grant GM a one time waiver to remove the locking capability of the steering column just as they are doing to all the automatic equipped cars.
Also take a few minutes to write your senator and representative to tell them that there are approximately 50,000 ticking time bombs (all manual shift C-5's) cruising the streets of this country with steering columns that could lock up at any time. Tell them that drivers are so fearful of this happening that they are (resorting to back street abortions) buying aftermarket devices to hopefully avoid the locked column. Tell your senator that you hope he or a member of his family is not in the path of one of these 50,000 potential death traps cruising our highways and ask him to push for a legislative waiver of the locking steering column for all C-5's and to force a recall on all of them.

Are you BS'n us? Anyone else send their receipt for a CLB to GM and get a check?

looks like GM is accepting the fact the a column lock bypass kit is an acceptable solution to their screw up. I have heard of a few others that have recieved reimbursment for this also.
to be absolutley safe, I would have the recall work done, then get the bypass also then you are covered on both ends.
I sent the form back to GM today with a copy of the invoice for the CLB I bought and installed in 2001. It will be interesting to see if I get the $59.95 back I paid for it. I told them I should really get reimbursed for the time I spent installing the CLB also, but was only asking for the cost of the part. The way I see it I am giving GM a deal.

good idea, i think this should be posted everywhere, i hope people will take their time to do this, im also going to talk to my lawyer and insurance agent and see what they think of it
If the CLB is installed and it cannot ever lock again it should be an issue unless someone steals it. And they say it was to easy to steal since you had the CLB. At least that's my thought on it.
Does anyone know if CL affects 2004 Vettes? I have a manual 6 that I bought in September of 04. I have not received any recall notices from GM about CL. Thanks. Dan

I believe it affects all MN6s no mattter of the year. I think I read that even the C6 has problems or was that the fuel gauge - hmm...
You will most likely not get a recall notice because your car was probably reprogrammed at the factory prior to delivery to the dealer.
Either way the fix from GM for MN6 was to only reprogram the computer to make sure that the fuel was shut off if the CL was activated. In some cars the driver was still able to start the car and drive it with the CL activated (though the car thought it was off) and GM did not want a major accident because of that.
I would tend to think that you should install the CLB and then not worry about it again....
