When you reprogram your PCM you basically swap the stock program for the custom program. When you are done loading the custom program the stock program is stored in the programmer. If you take the car in for maintenance and they check for any available software updates they could load an updated stock program right over your custom program. Then you have no more custom program since the programmer only has a back level version of the stock program.
You could sort of say you are locked out but its more like getting the shaft.
