I believe all C5 Corvettes have used vinyl shift/parking brake boots. GM cost savings measure. It sucks I know, but is easy to replace with leather ones, I did on my 2003 Z06.

If your brother's Vette has leather, did he buy it new and if so, is he sure it's actually leather. Some people have a hard time telling the difference.

The shift boots used to be real leather. I know they were in my 00 FRC and 01 Z06. However, on both of my 03's (coupe and Z06) they were some kind of imitation leather.

Yup, it's horrible stuff compared to VE products:

$160 from VE will cure your problem.

What is the big deal about leather? It cracks and splits. The man-made covering does neither and the emergency brake is easier to operate with non-leather as the material is thinner and more pliable.

If you had all-leather seats the outside part on the drivers seat would need replacing after 2-3 years just like on other cars.

I heard it was a weight reduction measure. It saved 0.000003 pounds.
Obviously cost, this is one of the reasons why the C5 was slaughtered on its interior on being cheap. Give the critics one item and they home in on the kill. Barring this item, the C5 interior is not cheap. Shame on the General for allowing this substitute on there flagship car.

I know what you mean, my 04 Z is the cheapy kind. My boy's 02 Z is the nice, thick, real leather. But hey...the vinyl is softer!!!

You may be right. GM either starting using the vinyl in 2002 or 2003 then. Someone told me all the C5's used vinyl boots, guess they were wrong. I would rather the boots be rubber myself.

Vinyl is not any better than using leather because vinyl also cracks as it ages and you can't prevent it. While leather can be treated to prevent cracking. The one thing vinyl does better than leather is it doesn't scuff like leather and is the reason GM replaced the sides of the seats with vinyl.
