I have a 98 auto vert with a few mods, not going into motor. Will this help the perf. Still have 273 gears. Thinking about upgrading to 342's.

Do the gear swap but do yourself a favor and pass on the HPP3 and stick that money towards a different brand of handheld tuner. Predator is popular along with the Vinci tuner. The gear swap will really wake your car up.

The Predator and Vinci are indeed more capable hand-held tuners. The problem is, neither one is available for a '98:

For the OP, if you do go with the HPP3, be sure you get the proper model for your year car:

Hypertech won't handle non-factory gear ratio scaling. PERIOD - END OF STORY.

It can scale A4's up to the 3.15 ratio, but can''t do the 3.42 on the C5 A4 (it was never available from the factory with that ratio).

The Predator can do non-factory gear scaling; but sadly won't work with 1997 or 1998 C5's

.

I bought a used one on this forum from another member for $100 and I thought it was well worth it for that price. It gave a SOP difference in performance, mostly torque. Kicks the fans on earlier and changed my shift points. If you can find one for this price I think you will be happy. I would not spent $325 on a new one. Get a professional dyno tune for an extra $75. If you think of doing other mods in the future wait on a dyno tune. The hypertech is ok for a stock motor, anything more, you may want a dyno tune or another hand held with more parameters.

Now be prepared to spend some money, and be advised it requires a laptop. Also according to my HPPIII instruction manual, 3.42 rear end is programable. If for some reason it is not you can get around it as tire diameter is adjustable.I am more than happy with mine. bought it used right here 2 years ago for $200.I chopped .78 off my 1/4 time and added 4.9 mph trap speed with just that & their t-stat and the ZO6 catback.

Lost I do not think the hypertech will program an A4 for a 3:42. I had one and I called the company and they said the only thing it will scale is factory option ratios and with the A4 that is 2.73 and 3.15. I also think mike mercury called them on the same issue. Adjusting the tire diameter will not help with rear end gear ratio scaling. I do agree it helps with your qtr mile ET though.

Mike - Please Help....You are exactly right...I just went out in the garage and tried my Hypertech Programmer and I'll be damned...It will Not let you change gear ratios except between the 2.73 and the 3.15...I don't understand this....The other guy is right....It does say on the Web site it will program up to 3.73 gears....I bought this POS and now what....Has anyway had any luck calling Hypertech on this and getting a refund!!! They clearly advertise on their Website that the gear ratios are programmable from 2.73 - 4.10.... Why would you need a hand held programmer to change gear ratios if you had the stock gears....This makes no sense...I am pissed...Any help would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks John
