Getting ready to install 342's in my 98 auto vert which has 273's at this time. When I get these gears changed, do I need 2 get my pcm reprogrammed. If so, how much does this normally cost and is there someone on the forum that does this or can I do it myself with some info from someone. I LIVE ABOUT AN HOUR FROM ATLANTA,GA. JOHN
you can delay the reprog by driving the car with the A4 shifter in the "3" range (stops the P1870 code from being set) ... and avoiding WOT runs (stops you from hitting the rev limiter).
After deciding to do the 2.73 to 3.42 swap I had some difficulty finding a hand-held reprogrammer to do the required computer mods. I did not want to go the PC route- LSEdit, HPTuners, etc.
Apparently the pre-99 PCM's have different stuff than later ones, and the popular hand-helds (Predator, Hypertech, etc.) will not work. My local tuner suggested "Superchips"- and I went with them. (BTW, I was "flamed" by the Forum for using this supplier.)
For this application there are no user adjustable parameters. You tell Superchips what you want, and they write and install a custom code for your VIN in the handheld- send it to you- and you upload the program to your PCM. If you are planning other mods, or want other changes- e.g. rev limiter, shift firmness, do it at the same time you get the gear scaling or it will cost $250 a pop later.
I had mine done just before my car went into winter hibernation- so I have not fully checked everything out yet- but preliminary indications are that the re-program did what it was supposed to do.

for some reason the Predator doesn't support the 1997 and 1998 C5.
There is another option though, the $99 "mail order tune" from a forum vendor. You send them your PCM with a list of car mods, they make the changes and send it back to you:
