Default Help: 342 DIFF

Will the diff gears (whole chunk) from a Z06 fit a reg C5. Reason 4 asking--bought a 342 diff 4 a 98 auto--looking at both 273 diff and 342 diff (both getrag's) look the same except 4 the front--just under where the shaft goes into the diff--there's a hole about a inch or so long which you can see the ring and pinion-- different from the 273 diff that came out of my car which does'nt have this hole. Does anyone know why it would be a hole in this 342 diff. JOHN

yes it will fit the C5. I am in the middle of changing my 2.73 to a 3.42. I got a 3.42 from a Z06. What is missing on the Z06 diff is the seal plate. This is a 6 inch diameter alum. plate that is on your 2.73. I have been told that you can remove the seal plate from yours and install it on the 3.42. I have also been told that it is easier to just buy another one. It is approximately $45. Don't forget to change out the half axle seals and the o-rings and the limited slip fluid to the diff fluid. I hear that the Mobile 1 synthetic diff. fuild is just as good if not better than the GM and about 3 times cheaper. From checking around the total cost for seals and stuff will be approx. $100. Hope this helps.

Think's 4 tha info. Just called my mech. he said that the hole is about 3in long and about 1 or 2 inches wide and that the hole where the shaft goes into has no place 4 a shaft seal, just a solid housing plate where the shaft goes into. JOHN

You just need to transfer the seal plate to the new diff. With a little work it will come out of the old diff. Not worth paying for a new one.

yep. Use a small pry bar, placed in the center hole and slowly pry the seal plate out.
