Default interesting edit problem yesterday.....

Just to start off I'll say I've never had any problems with edit after many many flashes. Yesterday I did encounter a problem but it was operator error more than anything I guess. Not really the softwares fault. Thought I would post here in case you guys run into the same problem.

I was logging A/F on my buddies H/C 98 C-5 yesterday and making PE changes. I took all my usual precautionary steps when flashing. I always do a read the first time through followed by a safe write then the actual flash. If that all goes good, which it always has, I'll then start doing a safe write followed by the flash for the rest of the day.

I did all the first steps and got the read, done the safe write, and finally the flash. The thing is I never heard his door bell ding like it usually does. I asked him if he heard it and he said he wasn't paying attention and there was a ton of traffic out in front of my house so I figured maybe I just missed it. The laptop is showing " All Done, turn off ignition and exit program" so that made me think I just missed the door bell. I exit out and we start the car and it has zero gauges and he can't access his DIC to clear codes.
Basically the entire dash was dead. So after thinking on it a few minutes I decide to flash back to our last known good file. I do the safe write and at the end of the safe write the door bell dings. Now I'm really puzzled because that doesn't actually do the write so why would the bell ding. We start it up and the gauges are back. Weird. We do another flash and it gets to the end and no bell again. I sit and we decide to leave it hooked up. About a minute later the bell dings. Start it up and gauges are fine. Not sure what was going on there. We did a couple more flashes and sometimes the bell would ding immediately and sometimes it would take a minute or so.
Just giving edit users a heads up that if the bell doesn't ding immediately give it some time. On my f-body it engages the fuel pump and it's always right as it finishes up. That pause really threw me.

I did have that same issue several times. Disconnecting-reconnecting the battery fixes it. I think it happens when you have something ON(i.e. interior lights?)

I've had that happen with both a Hypertech and now HP Tuners on the laptop. Reconnecting the device has always resolved for me--I did a reflash the first time it ever happened. And it does seem to happen if ANYTHING flinches during flash like interior lights, the door opens, or if the CD player was left on. I left the hatch open one time as a test and it happened then too. With HP Tuners getting the PID's on my 98 causes SES and a few other goodies. Gotta cycle the ignition and clear before uploading.

I had the PCM lose contact with the BCM after a Hypertech flash onetime, and that pretty much killed the car even though everything was closed/turned off, and the flash went perfectly. Can't clear that code....Hooking the PPIII up and powering it on magically fixed that one too

You lost com with the BCM.
In the footwell fuse box pull the Instrument Cluster Panel fuse ( #25 on a 2001 Z06) - while ignition is in the "On" position. Then turn key to "Off" and reinsert the fuse. It will reestablish communication and you are good to go.
Mine did this frequently with Edit.

That's the first time I've ran across that one. We flashed his car maybe 20 times last year without that happening. I did read somewhere onetime to open the passenger door on the vette's and I've flashed the car both ways but until Sunday no matter how I flashed it everything went fine. That is one thing I notice about you Y-body guys. Your cars are cursed with electrical glitches. To much stuff going on at one time. Being able to clear your own codes is nice but other than that I'd rather have my F-body electronics. Much simpler with less to go wrong.
