Are water pumps an item that fail more often than they should on the C5? I have been told that they last up to about 30,000 miles and then are a bitch to replace. Also, when they fail, they have been know to leak on the distributor resulting in big $$$ to repair because it shorts out the ignition system. I am considering a 2004. Thanks for the imput.

You're confusing LT1 and LS1 with the above comment. The LT1s are the ones that can leak on the Optispark (the "distributor"). I've heard of no issues with premature waterpump failures on any LS1 powered vehicles.

I just replaced mine over the weekend. 1998.....116,000 miles. Not much different from any other waterpump. I ended up removing the throttle body to make it easier to scrap off the gasket on the engine block. I also used a "paint & gasket remover" spray on the gasket. Spray it on....let it sit, scrap it off. I replaced the serpentine belts which also had 116,000 miles on them.
Now I'm all ready for "Vettes on the Boardwalk" in Ocean City, Maryland this weekend

Your statement is accurate for LT1 C4's and LT1 F-Bodies. The problem is when the water pump bearing goes and it leaks out the "weap" hole at the bottom of the pump which is directly above the opti.
I have replaced several optisparks and replaced a waterpump with an elec Meziere... Not too tough IMO.
THANK GOD C5's DO NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM - thanks to coil packs per cylinder
