I am overseas and i have been doing a lot of research on this forum and others about mail order tunes, there seems to be a lot of different tuners offering tunes at different prices. I would like to know if these Vette Doctors do mail order tunes because from what i have read they are a top notch shop with many happy customers.
I have not seen any advertising nor discussions offering this service. I believe they much rather see, feel and drive the car to make sure all is well. If you live somewhere really far from a professional Tuner ( like you ) I would say maybe it is your only choice.
I know the prices vary, some high some low, but I am not sure why. Most of the times, the mail order tunes are developed based on information, results and tweaks as a result of doing many "similar" setups. In the business world we call that Research and Development. That is normally amortized into the cost of the product and at some point you re-coup all (or most) your Non-recurring costs. That's when you normally "pass the savings on to your customers". I also realize they have costs associated with keeping up with the latest electronics and gadgets. Maybe some play too much in the future and don't let the Legacy items stay the course as the saying goes. To that, you will continue to amass large Development costs, and never be done.
As I am not a Tuner, I do not know intimately how the pricing is established. But, I would think that a hands on tune would cost more than a mail order tune. The beauty of today is we have the Internet and Forums to develop out own decisions on what is right or wrong for each individual and where to get the best product for the best price.
The correct way to do mail order tunes are much more time consuming than regular tunes. Just to point out some of the things involved, you would need your own wideband, and some software to data log. Data is reviewed here and then the file is sent out. The process is repeated. It's very time consuming and you are depending on someone else's eyes, ears, and hands.
There are some easier things to set such as playing around with the TM. That wouldn't be so difficult. It all depends on the level of mods you have.

I don't get the impression that that is the way it is being advertised by some. To me, and I could be wrong, most look like you send your PCM with a list of mods and you get it back. If someone has access, or even the knowledge of widebands etc, I might assume (I know!) he would be doing his own tuning or have someone closer doing it for him. One on the forum does offer the file, but I don't think the others do.

It's not done this way by some. But this is the right way to do it to get the most out of the tune.
The other way is just tuning by guestimation (not a real word, I know ).
It can have some gains, but is definitely not the best way.
Having the car tuned by someone local is always the best way to go... if they are knowledgeable that is.
