My stock 01 does the same thing and I have been advised to try cooler sparks plugs which I hope to get in this weekend. I also bought a 160 thermostat. I will do one at a time to see the difference.
Another post suggested it needed a tune as in dyno or computer tune.
I changed the plugs to NGK TR6 per TJWong a tuner in Washington and a member here and it solved the pinging. The engine runs cooler while cruising and when I nailed it no pinging. A simple (OK changing the plugs is a little pain in the ***) fix for $17.32 at Schucks.
Well I took the car out today in mid 80's temps and the pinging is back so the plugs were a partial fix with cooler temps. I am going to add a cool air intake and see how that does before I go to a 160 thermostat etc.

The crappy gas the EPA is giving us is the main cause. I'd run some Techron through it to make sure your injectors are clean. My 346 did it but my 403 not at all. You may also want to Seafoam the engine. How many miles on the engine?

Cooler heat range plugs WILL NOT make your car run cooler.
PS clean your MAF.

what is seafom, and how do you do it. My 99 pings to at slower speeds. What took care of that was a computer up grade and it stoped it , until the battery was disconnected.
My 03 did the same thing from day 1 and I bought it new, I tried adding octane booster but it still pinged. Finally one day I got it dyno tuned and told him about the pinging. He adjusted my fuel air ratio and the pinging has never returned no matter how hot it get out side.

I didn't think that is was possible but I swear the temps are cooler and it seems to cool down faster once the car is moving. Maybe it's my overactive immagination! I'll try the MAF. Do I need to remove the screen to clean the hot wires? Sounds like a tune may be in order too.

you dont have to remove the screen. it does make it easier, but you dont have to.
Plug heat range only refers to the temp of the tip of the plug. Its mainly for the purpose of keeping deposits off, or burning them off the tip.
The hotter the heat range, the better it is at keeping the deposits off. The draw back to a hot plug, is it can be a hot spot, and cause pre ignition, or ping.
Some will try to flame this suggestion but I really suggest that with your fairly high mileage that you give the car a couple of heavy Seafoam applications and see if it helps. It surely will not hurt. Many times the development of carbon in the combustion chamber can contribute to pinging/predetonation. A good tune can be the ultimate solution even if the motor is carboned up bad but why tune it full of carbon. Get it at any auto parts store and give it a couple of good direct applications and one strong tank application. It is also possible with an '01 that you are getting some oil blow by or oil in the intake which can cause pinging. Good luck.
I had the same pinging problem. I had replaced the stock intake and exhaust with a Vortex/Power Duct and Borla Stingers and X-pipe. I had the car at the tuners 2 weeks ago and I was running extremely lean. After the tune the problem was gone. Mash the gas and it jets with a happy growl.
