I got this warning today for the second time ever after an intense high RPM run through the twisties (pics from this cruise here http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show...post1563611464). The first time was over the summer after a few top speed runs during the day in the desert. I had taken my car for service to a local shop over the summer before these two incidents and according to the invoice "high performance transmission fluid" was added. Each time I pulled over and shut it down for a few mins and took it easy afterwords. Is this normal resiliency for these cars or do you guys have any recommendations. I am really not much of a gearhead but it would be nice to not worry about this if I go for an intense run or track day. I was also thinking of having my clutch fluid inspected and if need be replaced because of all the posts encouraging us to do so. Thanks for any help
Wow !! haven't heard of this happenning much--But I would make sure they used synthetic trans oil and then i would call someone on the forum who has a full race-type shop and look into some sort of a trans cooler set-up for the M6--Also wondering where it senses the temps--could it be clutch related ??
i get the same thing on the track in the summer. i just slow down and when the light goes off I haul *** again!. some guys just disconnect it
i do change my tranny oil every season-Syncromax, the fluid will go bad faster since it getting HOT!
i am going to put Tufoil additive in it next time. Truckers and commercial ship owners swear the tranny runs 20 degrees cooler with it. i bet the syncros will like it too
PS my tranny works like new, shoot it works better than any other C5 i have driven... one reason why i bought this one
I may put a combo cooler in the back with a fan and run the rear end and the tranny thru it ... one day ...too many mods to do
That message doesn't appear for the heck of it. You will burn up your trans. Full road course puts you through all the gears time after time and the heat especially in the summer builds up. For my 98 with third trans in it I ADDED EXTERNAL COOLER up front also deep dish trans pan $199 that holds 4 extra quarts and Amsoil syn fluid. If you hit 250 degrees shut it down asap.
Very common on track driven cars (and similar to the operating conditions which you saw). Saw this warning several times back when I was taking my car stock to track days. When I had it converted to an SCCA T1 class car, I put in a tranny cooler which more than doubled fluid capacity and obviously provides cooling. No more alarms.
My recommendations:
- Use a good synthetic fluid. Mineral oil fluids will not hold up as well. Check out the life of this recent test of Havoline and AMSOIL ATF: AMSOIL vs Havoline ATF Viscosity Testing
I have been using AMSOIL ATF in my 02 Z06 on the track since 2004 without any failures. I also run this fluid in my 06 CTS-V daily driver. I will probably shift to the AMSOIL Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid this season, also a Dexron III product, as it has a slightly higher viscosity than the ATF which was reformulated last year to comply with the newer Dexron VI specification.
- Change your fluid often. Again, see the data on the Havoline above. I change mine fluid about every four track days.
- If you get a high temp warning, back off. Lower rpm (slow down or shift to higher gear). Your fluid's visocisty is very low at that high temp.
