My service engine soon light which then displays active handling keeps appearing. What could be the cause of this and is it something I need to take in to get fixed. Seems when I hit bunps at certain times my brakes kick in and the warning light goes on. I can restart the car and it will stay off for a while. Any ideas thanks.
I'm having the same issue...mine hasn't actually applied brakes yet tho thank God.
The code is C1288
Any help is appreciated
DTC C1288 is a Steering Sensor Circuit Malfunction...Type (this code #) into the C5 "Search" window & you will find posts relative to how-to service this problem.
My car has no code to post. The service engine soon then followed by service active handling appears. I checked for codes but it doesnt find any.
FIRST YOU MUST...(with the key in the on position, but the engine not running) push and release the reset button until all messages are cleared...
next push and HOLD button #4
next push and release button #1 four times while holding button #4
When first engaged the on-board diagnostics go into an "automatic" mode which shows all parameters: PCM-TCS-RTD-BCM-IPC-radio-HVAC-LDCM-RDCM-SCM-RFA. If there are no problems, you will see "no more codes" on the ICP display. The computer will show two kinds of codes, "current" and "history," designated "C" or "H". A current code indicates a malfunction is present in the system whose module is displaying data. A history code indicates a past problem. When the screen displays "manual diagnostics," select the desired module by pressing the "options" button to go forward or the "trip" button to go back. Press "gages" to go forward or "fuel" to go back. To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press "E/M".
If you want to erase or "clear" codes, press "reset."
Hello,
The dealer wants $425 to replace the sensor in the steering wheel vicinty. The service active handling doesn't come on all the time, mostly when the air conditrioner is on.
Should I get this fixed or wait until it goes for good?
Terry...the way you describe (what causes your problem) sounds more like a connectivity or continuity issue rather than a bad sensor. Have you, or your technician, checked the wiring, grounds and/or connections that can affect this? it may just be a poor ground or a corrosive/dirty connection ..

Looks like the steering sensor, but BEWARE...
Have someone who really knows the car check it out cause MOST guys that just replace the sensor DON'T FIX THE PROBLEM.
I solved my intermittent problems - turned out to be the interconnect plug from the ABS module to ABS pump.
The plug was partially dislodged, and displayed all of the above symptoms at various times, including slamming on the rogth or left front brake without warning at times.
Once the plug was firmly seated, all issues went away.
