Default Timing Question

If I have 33 degrees of advanced timing and 1 degree retarded timing as a safety margin, What would be the consequences? Will my engine go Kabom?

Depends on where you have the 33*---The timing at part throttle goes above 33 at many points--However if you are speaking about WOT-I would say that that is really pushing a gen3 motor--also if your knock sensors are working you probably will never get an actual 33* even though you are commanding it--The KR system should automatically remove timing if it senses any pinging if they are working properly--but why chance it---My experience with timing on these motors is that adding timing does not result in huge HP gains as thay might on a SBC or BBC--I've experimented with 19* all the way up to 30* and have settled on 24 with ls6 heads at 10.49 compression-I did lose 8HP at 19* but the comp took out timing with 30 down to 27-----24 seemed to be a safe compromise with 91 octane Calif gas and I did not see more than 2-5 HP difference at ay setting on the dyno other than the 19 whee i lost 8----Again I am talking about pump gas--Working with 100-110 oct race fuel could net you some different results but I would be willing to bet that the gains would be minimal--

Thanks for your response. My is set to 30 now, and 28 if it knocks at WOT. This is now a 383 stroker, ls6 block. I had another tuner tell me to set it at 28. His explanation was the automatic transmission will last longer.

If you are going to set your max advance at 30*, I would set your available retard at 10-12*. This way you can use all the timing you want until it starts to ping. The PCM will pull timing (up to the max retard) incrementally until the pinging stops.
