Default Ultimate tuning package?

I'm looking to buy a tuning setup. Ideally it would be one package. However, if several packages can get me the same thing I'm happy. I would really like it to not require any credits either.

Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Scan tool (should require no credits).
2. Data Logger capable of simultaneously reading wideband o2's w/ recording and playback features. (Preferably no credits).
3. Repramming / tuning ECU / PCM.

I've been looking at EFI Live and HP Tuners. However, both appear to require credits.

My goal is to tune for a supercharger system. I have some experience tuning my old LT1 for a new camshaft but ultimately would need a package that is user friendly and has a large user base to pull questions from.

I personally use HPTuners, but I don't know that EFI Live is any worse, or any better for that matter. I chose it due to the people around me that had/used/knew the package. Neither of them are easy to tune with, but both are capable of doing what you want.

HP Tuners does not require any credit usage for logging or pulling tunes, only to write tunes. So you can log away on any car you want with no credit usage. It's also relatively cheap when you price it all out.. I bought the standard one (WB through EGR works fine, or buy the pro version and have a bunch of inputs) and tuned my 1998 as well as a 2006 Z06 so far, using 4 of the 8 credits that came with it for $499. Hinson supercars has a good sale with a wide band right now, might be worth a look. Also, don't confuse how credits work- once you license your car you can upload as many tunes to it as you want, its simple and easy. HTH!

These wideband setups slightly confuse me.

1. Do you use one in place of the stock o2 sensor?
2. Don't you need two? One for each bank? If not what is are you missing out on.
3. How does the PC plug into it? Do you have to have a gauge for the PC to interface with. It doesn't look like they have much of anything in the harness for a serial data line.

Thanks!

1. I've always had an extra bung welded in before the cat(s) and installed the sensor there.
2. I've always just used one
3. I just run my LM1 right into my hptuners interface & software, the wideband doesn't actually get connected to the pc directly in my case.

I am an EFILIVE tuner--so it would be my choice --I studied both (HP) before purchase and picked EFILIVE and have been totally happy--their support and technical help is great and for you a beginner , this should be the most important thing--
EFILIVE doesn't use that credit thing--too confusing---You need 1 licence per vehicle--with the personal package--you'll get 2 licenses to tune 2 vehicles
It is best to have a dedicated bung for the wideband--have a muffler shop weld one in for you--It is NOT neccesary to have a bung on each side--on a 100% race application yes--but on a street/strip car--no-overkill---EFILIVE V2 will come will adatper plugs that connect the wideband to the programmer--most wideband kits have a gauge on them--I recccomend the innovate LM-1- It can read and record AFR as a stand alone unit by itself or you can record the data onto your EFILIVE flashscan logger---but a separate gauge is not needed

Does HPT read the voltage coming off the wideband O2? Or is it reading a serial data line from a wideband controller?

I'm also curious is it possible to transfer HPT credits? I only need to register one vehicle. So can a person sell the remaining credits to someone whom needs them? Or would that require that they use your specific copy of the program?

It reads from the analog output from the wideband controller

Credits/Licenses cannot be transferred from one interface to another. With that said once you are done tuning your vehicle you would sell the interface & any left over licenses/credits go with the interface to the new owner.

Awesome. Thanks Bill. Yeah I think if you guys are reading the analog output I'll just buy a sensor and wire it up on my own as apposed to buying a controller.

The controller is what allows you to read an analog reading, I don't believe its possible straight off of the o2 sensor.

I personally lend my HPTuners out to friends to use (which is legal eagle according to the HPTuners folks) and they pay for the credits they use ($50/credit normally). If you buy it for $500 and sell 6 of the 8 credits.. you're into it just $200. Plus, then you've always got it.. just in case . Mine is always floating around my group of car buddies.

The wideband sends an analog signal 0-5 volts--
