Default Plug Wires

I am changing out plugs and wires on my stock LS1. Any suggestions on a good wire set? I am putting E3 plugs and will be adding LG Street longtubes this summer with a tune... nothing big, just want a good set of wires.

Also, should I worry about the coils...

This is all started because of a knock or ping at higher RPMs ... Got 43K on on it and figure that the stoke plugs and wires should be replaced....

Any other ideas?

The coils are fine and I used the MSD Superconductor Plug Wires. They worked well even with headers.

I'm curious... How does the pinging lead you to change the plugs and wires? I am trying to diagnose a problem on my car and this is interesting.

I got this car 2.5 years ago. It is a 2003 that had been purchased and stored. I got it with 3,400 miles. I now have 43K ... but the wires are still 5 or 6 years old. So I want to start "a new" with plugs and wires to insure that it is not the wires (mainly) that are breaking down at high RPMs.

The "pinging" is at high RPMs only when the highest amount of stress in on the ignition (and eveything else). If this does not correct it, then I will start diagnostics on what it could be....

Bottom line, I think it is time for the wires to be replaced because of age, and if I do that, might as well do the plugs... As for plugs, I am going to try the E3 plugs.

Thanks for the question and look forward to any and all feed back.

Let me know if changing the plugs and wires fixes the ping that you are describing. I have exaclty the same thing going on.... crackling/pinging noise at high RPM under WOT at the top if 1st and 2nd before shifting. Mine's a 2001 with 29k miles. I noticed this after taking it from storage last season and I never heard the noise before.

Plug wires: had a similar thing, the ping. It was suggested to me to stop using Shell high test and try BP high test; It worked no ping with BP..good luck with your ping resolution.

E3 plugs? Are they good? I thought they were snake oil? Am I mis-informed?

Well that is interesting about Shell... I use it almost exclusively. That is very interesting. I will try switching fuels for a few tanks. My Schedule is packed full for the next couple weeks so I will not be doing the plugs and wires so I will see what happens with a fuel change.

As for E3’s I saw a deal on Horsepower TV series when I can on the weekends. They did a deal where an engine on a stand produced “X” amount of HP. They only switched plugs and found that HP gains on some plugs. The E3 produced a jump in HP (7 I think) … not bad for just plugs – also increased the MPG…. So if I’m changing plugs I figured I would give it a try.

Anyone else have info on E3’s?

Here is exactly what you need to do.

seafoam treament-once done, you will need to replace plugs and oil/filter

use ngk tr6 plugs, gapped exactly at .040"

if you have the newer design red plug wires, re-use, other wise msd super conductor wires, and not anything else

make sure the hot wire in your mass air meter is clean, as well as your filter, and make sure the filter is NOT overoiled.

get rid of the e3 plugs, and spend your money on a stripper, if you really need to waste money

Do this exactly as prescribed (sans stripper), and let me know when this is fixed.

I was also advised that cleaning the MAF sensor could eliminate the ping.

Yup I used shell in my car till this week.I just changed over to Exxon and added some techron to kill the spark knock.Gonna go back to the dyno this Friday. You would think that shell would be one of the best gasolines to get.But after reading this thread that sealed the deal for me.Exxon or BP from now on.
