Caution before buying from Hypertech
As a gift, I received a Hypertech Hyperpac less than a year ago. It cost $499.99 plus shipping.
No where on the box does it say that it can be used with only one car. But, it does say that it locks to the car in the instruction manual after you open the box.
Ok, box opened. I connected it to my car and used it a few times to simply monitor some gauge displays. I then decided that I wanted to sell it (after some major updates to my car and purchasing other tuning software). So, I write to Hypertech (copied below) to ask how I can unlock it so that someone who may find better use for it can use it.
... And, their reply is copied, below.
This is just an “FYI” to keep in mind if you want to buy one of their products. I can’t see me paying another $200 (over $700 in total) just to sell it for maybe $250

The fee is $200 plus shipping to reset/update a Hyperpac. If interested give our tech line a call for details on how to proceed. Thanks
Jim

Subject: Help with HyperPac Lock
HyperTech,
June 24, 2009
My wife purchased a Hypertech HyperPAC #83006 for me, last July (2008), to use with my Chevy Corvette.
PN: 83006
Serial Number: 1319339
Rev: 14.00.03.016
99-04 Corvette LS1/LS6 5.7L
I used the unit a few times to monitor the car, but did no tuning with it.
Since then I have had the car rebuilt for drag racing and am now using EFI Live for data logging and tuning.
I would like to sell the HyperPAC but believe another person may not be able to use it due to it being "locked."
Can you tell me how I can reset the unit back to normal so that I can sell it to someone who can use it?
Thank you in advance,

$60 is a lot less than $200. Has anyone used these guys to reset their HPP?
I sent a follow up to Hypertech and told them that they are basically full of BS... I may also file a complaint with the Dept. of Consumer Affairs as the product is not marketed nor labeled to indicate this to the buyer until after purchase, inside a user's guide: it is not explicit and does not state a charge for any reset. I'm not sure that will get me anywhere, but that $200 is highway robbery.
As expected, they have yet to reply to my second email to them, where I indicated my intent to file a complaint. But, they sure were fast to get back to my original email and ask for that $200!
Anyway, enough ranting... Thanks for the info!
