Default Worth a tune?

Basically I have a 02 M6 Vert with Kooks long tube headers, no cat, and a magnaflow exhaust. I did not do the work to it so I don't know what exact model headers or exhaust is under the car.

I was just wondering if it would be worth getting a professional tune for it? Or maybe do a cold air intake and a trottle body?Kind of looking to get the best bang for around $500 out of the thing. I have had it about 1.5 years and now its time to start toying around with it. Glad to hear what you guys think. TIA

ZRT

As the guy on Storage Wars sez..."Yep"..!

Vararam probably =$250 and an ECS mail order tune =$150.

IMO....money well spent.

A dyno tune should run around $300-$350. If you watch for a used CAI, in the C5 Parts for Sale section, you should be able to do what you want for $500...

Another question. What is a difference from a dyno tune and a ECS Tuner? Just seems to be a true dyno tune would yield more power. No? What would be the benefits of each?

Doug@ECS can explain better, but I'll try.

The mail order tune is a preset tune that Doug loads to your car that he has set up for similar cars. ECS has tuned so many cars that they have a tune for just about every car/combination.

Street tune. I believe they download a preset tune in your car, but then take the car out for a short drive to monitor the perfromance and make any adjustments accordingly.

The dyno tune is simply that. They run the car on the dyno 2 or 3 times and adjust your tune accordingly.

They get more expensive from top to bottom. If you are just doing the CAI, headers, and tune, I'm betting the mail order tune will suffice. That is a very common combination that I am betting Doug has done 1000X.

Not sure what you met by ECS tuner - do you mean a handheld? I think in that case you get a mailorder type tune loaded to the handheld making it easier to load. I believe it allows you to retain your stock tune to load back if need be. But you have to buy the handheld device as well.

Start with the CAI, t-stat, and tune. Vararams seem to offer the best performance increase from what I hear but I have a Donaldson Blackwing. Good luck.

Now are there two parts to a Vararam ? One is the intake with filter, and the other is a optional duct type "ram air" that located down near the air dam of the front end? Or is it all one package?

For the T-stat just get a 160*? I assume the stock one is around 190*.

I think its technically 3 pieces. Google C5 Vararam - there are pics. You have the large piece that houses the filter that connects to the throttle body, and then two pieces that connect to the bottom of that piece and down to the air inlets on the bumper for the ram air effect.

Its a 160 t-stat.
