I am wanting to purchase a ZO6. The seller told me that it would not pass inspection due to a code that comes up related to the air pump monitor saying not ready. I called a local tuner and he said it is tuned out if there is no light, which there isn't. He said to pass inspection I would have to take it to them they would fix it to pass inspection then I would need to bring it back to them to put it back to how it needed to be. The shop that originally tuned it is a ways away from me and I live in Houston with a lot of great tuners. The shop that originally tuned it (Nelson Tuners San Antonio, TX) locked it according to the seller. My question is would the car be able to be altered enough to pass inspection or would the tune have to be unlocked before anything could be done?
Thanks, that is what I figured. I called the shop this morning and they did say they would unlock, but they take it back to the stock tune. Thanks again.
IMO tuners should not lock a PCM for that very reason. If you want to sell a car or need to pass emmisons that has a locked PMC and the tuner is not around anymore your screwed. You will have to buy a new or used PCM and pay to have it reflashed. I won't deal with a tuner that locks a PCM.
It's becoming more of an issue now to with some new emmision laws in my area. They can now detect any non factory progaming which means you will have to have the stock tune in the PMC to pass.
I thinks it is Chicken S--t to lock any tune--I never do--and YES it mus tbe unlocked before anyone can get into the ECM-- Ask them if they will simply "unlock it" and leave the tune that's in it---That can be done and you'll retain the tune that's in it---Even if they charge you just to unlock it- it would be much easier for you---If the car is running fine--I would try to retain the tune as is--
If you think they need to disable or set the AIR pump codes and readiness tests to "not reported" and "ready" they should be able to do that all at once as well
Its your tune and you paid for it, tell them to unlock it and not touch the tune. If they refuse then they are A-holes. First question to ask a tuner is do they lock the tune and if they do tell them to go F off and take your business elsewhere.
