So about a month ago a lot of mods went into my 98 coupe. It received a supercharger, ls2 heads, ls6 cam, 3.42 rear and many other miscellaneous pieces.
Well I picked up the car and the check engine light was not on. I took the car to get tuned a week later and the light came on while I was driving to the shop.
The car was tuned and runs great but the check engine light keeps coming on after I clear the code. Any ideas here?
I did notice that there was a small relay of some sort that attaches to a hose on the drivers side which was connected but was not attached to the metal bracket which caused my frc to not fit properly. (I removed it from the elbow hose to look it over).
It indicates an A.I.R. system malfunction. Specifically it means the PCM determined the heated O2 sensors voltages did not respond within the allotted time. They have to fall below 222 mV in < 1.3 seconds on both banks during closed loop operation. Or the short term fuel trim did not change more than a predetermined amount.
The above will cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to come on. If after 3 consecutive ignition cycles where the diagnostic runs and passes it will go out.
Possible causes:
-Low system air flow
-Excessive exhaust system back pressure
-Moisture, water or debris ingested into the AIR pump
-Pinched, kinked, heat damaged, or deteriorated hoses or vacuum lines
-Restrictions in the pump inlet, duct, or filter
The car will run fine with the system inoperative. It only runs during startup to help the CATs light off faster. It does this by injecting air into the exhaust.
The pump is located inside the front fascia on the drivers side. You'll find its intake connected to the engines air intake. It's a small squarish box. The plumbing goes into each header. (The small tubes that come off the headers) There are also two check valves the prevent exhaust gasses from entering the AIR system plumbing. They are located next to those connections on the headers where the AIR plumbing attaches. If one of them goes bad you will get a P1415 or P1416 code. (Fairly common with aftermarket headers).
Did you remove any part of the stock headers or delete/block off the air pipe coming out of one of them? If you did and the tune was not adjusted you'll throw that code your getting. Being your from California I am like 99% sure you need those small air pump hoses located on the header(s) and the pump. Deleting them is not an option for you, therefore tuning them out or adjusting the tune to have them "off" is not an option either. Might want to check with your tuner to make sure he didn't accidentally do that...switch it to "off". Some of them do it by default cause most the guys take the air pump systems off their cars when they do mods such as what your talking about. Like I said though...in California Iam pretty sure it's illegal to delete it or tune it "off."
