when upgrading the cam in a C5, is a new ECU tune required or just recommended for more power? the reason I ask is because I'm located in Montana and there arent many tuning places nearby and id like to do the cam swap myself
You'll probably have driveability issues like low RPM surging/stalling and poor idle at the least. The car will run though, unless the cam is very extreme.
What are the specs on the cam? Some mail order tuners can get close, but getting a dyno tune would be best. The mail order can get you driving, and dyno finishing it up.
I thought I was the only one with no Tuna's close by You might consider adding tune software to your cam purchase, then its simple email upload/download.
I think ChuckCoW does mail order, where he gives you a datalogger but I'm not sure how the tuning process works, i.e. if he sends you PCMs or if he gives you all the stuff to flash your PCM and he just builds the tunes based off of your logs.

You definitely need to get the vehicle tuned, and I highly recommend a custom tune on a dyno over a mail order tune. This will both maximize your power potential and driveability, as opposed to a mail order version which is more of a best guess. I would try and find a reputable shop with experience tuning these cars.
I agree--most likely the car will start but won't idle and may surge or die----A mailorder tuner can get it close but it may take sevaral back and forth re-sending of the ecu to reflash it to make corrections--depends on your LS and engine knowledge--If you can describe exactly what it's doing wrong a mail order tuner can fix it--but if your car knwledge and seat of the pants feel isn't real good--you will save time and money just taking to a tuner and have it all done by them --one trip and finished---
Tunesbyfrost did mine. After my tspv2 232/234 .595/598 112lsa cam swap. Filled out the paper mailed it in got it back pluged it up and it's awesome. Drove it about 100 miles before I sent it off and was fighting surging and bucking. Now night and day. The motor and the car is so much smoother. I like you lived no where near a Dyno shop and this was so nice to be able to do.
