Does an A4 tune damage the automatic transmission as a result of the reprogrammed shift points? Are there any other long-term negative side effects?

 

No trouble with mine. The shift is pretty firm and quick. Some people say it is easier on the clutch packs to have the firmer shift. The performance is night and day. Not only because of the firmer shift but also because they can turn the torque management off.

 

Generally the answer is no, it does not damage the Trans.

There are exceptions to the tune though. How much power (torque) you're car is making and depending on what is done to the torque management tables, can damage a Trans.

If you bolt a supercharger on and eliminate all TM with a stock Trans, could overpower the Trans and cause a failure.

On a stock or Bolt-on setup, a Trans tune shouldn't hurt and can actually help, providing that the tuner actually increases pressures, reduces slip and doesn't lower pressures.

 

A properly tuned A4 will make the trans run cooler and last longer--even with crisper shifts--The way GM makes the shifts soft is to slip the clutches--Bad for heat--bad for clutch life--- A stock A4 can handle stock HP with bolt on mods---But when you get near the 400 RWHP range--NO--You will at some point toast your tranny if you drive it hard-- and will need to build a better higher HP capable tranny

 

Thanks for the feedback. I had my 2004 A4 tuned in 2012. It is certainly more responsive however it seems as though the shifting is more pronounced and I was curious whether or not that was having any negative long-term effects on the transmission. The only other performance mods I have is a Callaway Honker CAI and Corsa Indy exhaust with X-pipe. I also installed a low temp stat per advice of the tuner.
