Default programing software

I would like to know where one could get a software to put on a pc laptop to monitor or even reprogram some of the setting. years ago i ve seen this on old tv shows where one had his lap top connected to his vehicle an could reprogram such as timing for example. im not much into the acutal reprogramming even thought interesting to experiment but more interested in looking at live data. i have a 2004 and would love any info on how they do things like this. Thanks all

These are full programming software companies that allow you to address all the 400 tables in the engine file and all the 350 in the trans file
Some handheld programmers allow some minimal user changes with maybe access to 10 or 15 tables---Diablo is the king of the handheld tuners with more accessible tables than any of the others
depends on your mods or future planned mods--Most handhelds are good for only 100% stock cars--Diablo can work with most major bolt ons--But if you are planning major mods like cam/heads/headers etc then only a full programmer like HP or EFILIVE will allow you enough tables to make it driveable
