Default Hypertech Programmer

A local corvette technician who does a lot of mods and is well thought of, suggest the Hypertech Computer Programmer and 160 deg thermostat as a way to get more performance out of a relatively stock car (2002 A-4). Does anyone want to comment on his suggestions? Also, what is involved in installing the hypertech (ie, can this be done at home), and are the variables adjustable. WCC advertises it as a program to adjust shift points, rev limiter, etc but doesn't say anything about power improvement to the engine (timing, fuel, etc). Any comments would be appreciated.

I'd consider doing superchips, diablo, or ls1edit for hypertech.

Actually, for a stock vehicle like yours with an A4, they work pretty darn good and are very easy to use. Pretty much idiot proof (no offense). You can visit here and even download the manual at http://www.hypertech-inc.com/ before you buy. Of course when you get ready to sell your car, you just program it back to stock and sell the programmer by itself.

Perhaps in the long run the Hypertech is a waste of money because the more mods you make you will get to the point where the Hypertech can't do the job. Then LS1 Edit is the way to go. But LS1 Edit is a lot more expense up front and a PC is needed, too. If you're going to keep your Vette and continue to mod then LS1 Edit is the answer IMO. But I've had my Hypertech for three years now & just upgraded to LS1 Edit last month. My next round of mods I will need more options. But the Hypertech did work for me for three years. And I used the Hypertech program as a starting point for my own program.

Changing to 3.42 gears from the 3.15's will give you more bang for the buck and no programming is necessary. Ask Me or Mike Mercury.

The main thing I wanted to do was firm up my shifts and lower the coolant temp.
The Hypertech was simple and worked great.

I don't think Hypertech offers a unit for the 2002 or later corvettes at this time. Diablo Sports does offer the Predator for 97-03 LS1's however.

The Hypertech works great on my car. I made a before/after dyno run and got 18 HP more just from the programming. I have only a few bolt on Modifikations (see my signature).
i made shure about the gains of the PP, so i made a Dyno run after i installed all the bolt ons, then i programmed with the Hypertech, made another run and got 18 HP only from the programmer.

Hypertech does not currently offer a programmer for c-5 o1-o3. I did call them and gave them my vin# and they sent me a programmer they said would work. I had a local shop progam my car and it definitly improved the performance of my car. The other mods I have made are: k&n ram air,b&b high flow cats and a cags. I took it to the track Sunday and run a best time of 12.99 @110 mph. I was turning 6100rpm thru through the lights! not bad for an otherwise stock 2001 convertible 6 speed on orginal tires.

With just the mods in my sig, I'm now able to run consistant 0-60 times in the high fours , which is a full 1/2 second quicker since the addition of the hypertech and iridium plugs, and those times are with cruddy 60 fts in the 2.2-2.3 range. With some decent rubber I expect to get in the mid fours. By the way I have shift firmness at 75%, 1-2 shift plus 3mph, 2-3 plus 5, rev limiter set at 6400....

I like mine and it was very goof proof to use. Just follow the directions and I think you will be pleased. I programmed Mine as flollows,
1st to 2nd shift +2mph
2nd to 3rd shift +5mph
3rd to 4th shift no change

Rev limiter set to 6,200rpm

Shift firmness is set to 75%

I use A 195% optimize setting because I did not change my thermostat.
I programmed for non-RFG fuel

I have A 273 ratio rear with an A4, A Donaldson Blackwing, and Magnaflow Exhaust wit X-Pipe. Best time was 12.721 @ 111.3

I think if you are not going to Mod more then Exhaust and Air intake. The Hypertech is A very good advancement in efficiency for the C5 Corvette with an automatic transmission.

Just installed an LS-6 Intake, GM HI Performance Wires, and an AC Delco Glass Mat Battery. My Hypertech III is due any day. After reading the posts I had an easy time making a decision to purchase the Hypertech over some of the other systems.

My goal is to firm up the shift points, raise the rev limiter, and lower the fan on temperature. Thanks to the forum members and their suggestions.

That's what I did with my Predator, plus made some fuel and timing changes.

I installed the Hypertech Programmer on my 02 A4 last week. Prior mods include an 02 Z06 airbox, and Z06 cat back.

Based on about 100 miles of driving, there is a noticable power boost from idle to redline at WOT, and the cooling fans come on much earlier which keeps the engine at optimal temparature. I kept the stock thermostat...for now. Also tuned the shift points to optimal RPM (1-2, 2-3 are now right at 6000 RPM), but left the shift firmness alone. The way I see it, for a mostly stock car, it is a great value as it costs all of $75 more than a cooling fan kit, and does not require running a bunch of wires under the hood.

I think it is an excellent mod for a mostly stock vehicle, and recommend it. From seat of the pants perspective, it definitely gained a couple of tenths in the quarter, and is more consistent, particularly after sitting in traffic.

Well I went ahead and ordered one and am real satisfied also. I went with a 6300 rev limiter and 75% shift firmness and increased the 1-2 and 2-3 shift by about 3 mph, and did the power program. I feel a noticeable difference, it burns rubber off the line like crazy (I got to figure out how to launch better) and it chirps the tires on both the 1-2 shift and 2-3 shift. Going to the track in Feb to verify results. I have the same mods as ElectronBlue02.

I have a '98 with 54K miles, Blackwing, 160 degree thermostat, 3.42 gears and use an HPIII programmer. Works great. I don't actually need anything more.

I got the HPIII from a member of the forum for $150 plus shippping. I installed the program myself and it takes time that's all.

Go for it.

Thanks for the replies concerning the HPIII Programmer. I guess I should have included in my blurb my modifications for further scrutiny.
Vararam Ram Air
SLP MAF
172 deg. T-Stat
8mm GM Performance Wires
LS-6 Intake
Throttlebody By-Pass
Fuel Line Recurve Kit
Borla Stingers (two Sewer pipes)
Corsa 'X' Pipe
tomorrow the HPIII Programmer as scheduled

I hope that I realize just a little for the dollar ratio to fun.
