The ECM went bad on my 2001 C5 (out of warranty) I bought one from GM and installed it myself. Someone told me that the new ECM needs to go through a download to work. After the install, the motor cranks over, fires and dies. I can hear the fuel pump running for the intial start up. Shouldn't the new ECM have some type of "limp" mode to allow the engine to run or does the ecm need the download to correct something in the theft system. Please help!
You are correct that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) requires programming before it can operate. Get access to the GM Corvette Shop Manual for your year car.
Section 10 of the manual covers Vehicle Control Systems and contains procedures for programming the PCM. Section 6 covers replacement procedures for the PCM. These procedures require access to special electronic equipment and the correct data parameters for your specific car.
