I know this is kind of a far fetched question but, I had a cam installed and my 2001 LS6, heads decked and new 2002 LS6 valves put in with new springs and tuned and now the car uses a ton of oil.
Is there anything in the tune that could cause this ???
I have a combo somswhat like yours and had a similar problem with oil consumption. There has been several members with these oil usage problems, I have read on the forum it may be your driving style and one member was going to test different combinations on his car and write the findings in the forum, but the vast amount of threads just say get over it and put that $4 dollar quart of oil in. So that's the way I'm going.
Well I have installed the 2004 LS6 valley cover and a AMW catch can and still have the problem and am now going to replace the rings. This car used NO oil before the heads and cam change.
If the valve seals were improperly installed then oil could be sucked down the valvestems into the combustion chamber. Also, if the PCV system was put back together wrong then oil could be sucked into the intake.
A quart every few hundred miles ( provided that few hundred miles isn't WOT the entire time ) is definitely a problem. I haven't had any issues since I added a valve cover breather and PCV catch cam.
I had my oil changed by a dealer when I first bought my C5. In 3000 miles, I used 1.5 quarts even though I drove it like a cream puff. I did another oil change and specifically stated Mobil 1, 5w30, synthetic oil. Now I have driven almost 3000 miles and it has used almost no oil at all. I also did an oil analysis with Blackstone labs and the results said it was normal regarding engine wear, etc.. Now I'm thinking that the dealer put regular 5w30 in it the first time. This scared me because the owners manual says it could hurt the engine. But the engine is running fine and not using any oil now. So if you had someone else change the oil, find out if they used synthetic. Maybe that is the reason.
They broke it in on 10w30 mineral based and then went to 10w30 Mobil 1. It's pretty standard for engine builders to do that because it causes more pressure to help seat everthing.
No, if you replying to my comment on the wrong type of oil, I bought the car used with 26K miles. I had a dealer change the oil because I knew the service manager. I'm not positive the oil was the wrong type but it is the only explanation I can give in why the first 3000 miles used 1.5 quarts and the next 3000 used about 0.1 quarts. The receipt did not give the type of oil, but the second time I asked for Mobil 1 and "Mobil 1" was hand written on the printout.
PS - All I'm saying is that if "Z060nTrack" had someone else work on his engine, perhaps they did not put synthetic oil in it when they finished and put things back together. Just a guess.
