Default Climate Control Lights and Display Out

Howdy all:

One by one the lights on the buttons on my climate control (the dual zone kind) have winked out. Now at night there's not much to see. The amber lights that indicate that one of the modes is active in the button does work, though.

Worse, the fluorescent display showing the temperature/mode/etc is out completely. It sort of faded over time, and every so often it will show up for a while and then go off. It seemed like I could press on the display a bit and make it come back but now it's just out for the count.

I've seen some references to this but no details or solutions. Is this worth taking apart? Any pointers in taking it apart? Is it likely to be just burned out bulbs and a loose connection?

I took mine apart and resoldered the display pins but it didn't help.
Plan to buy a replacement unit for $175. later this year.

Is there any trick to taking apart the center console to get to it?

What kind of bulbs are used?

Just start yanking on it, it will come loose!

Ok, maybe not such a good idea. I've taken mine out several times with putting in a new shifter, running the mp3 player control and cut-out switch. It's not that hard, just need a socket and the right torx bit. There's a torx screw in the little themometer by the steering wheel, just pop off that cover, there's two behind the cig lighter. There's two bolts on the back of the console and two under the traction control button. I may be forgeting some, it's been a while. You just raise up the front half a little and pull out the consol. You can leave the shift **** and leather boot on the shifter, just push the boot down into the consol. Then it takes a lot of creative wiggling to get the front piece off. The only tricky part is getting all that stuff plugged in when putting the consol back on.

It's possible to replace the LED's that light up the buttons at night but I don't know of a fix for the VFD (vacuum florescent display). I'm not looking at it now but I believe it's all one unit so a replacement is probably in order.

My A/C LED is out and my VFD is getting dimmer by the day.
