What is so special about the PS that is need "special" gm fluid and not ATF like others.
Thanks
This might help: I recently read an article by Hib Halverson which stated that GM started using synthetic power steering fluid in vettes in 1992. This makes me believe my factory fill (2004 coupe) is synthetic gm fluid.
I would use a synthetic PS fluid for your system if not the GM power steering fluid that meets the spec for corvettes. I understand Valvoline synthetic PS fluid meets the spec.
I've been filling and sucking out my PS resevoir for the last 2 weeks, trying to get a clear fluid out of the tank. I've used about 50 ounces of Valvoline synthetic PS fluid for a total of 5 changes. Does anyone know what the total fluid capacity of the system is? If the ratio was 50 % tank and 50 % rest of the system, the first time you change the fluid in the resevoir, you should have a 50-50 mixture after circulating while driving. After the second suck and fill, the percentage of old fluid should be 25 %. After the 5th time, the percentage of old fluid in the system should be 3.125 %, and the fluid should be fairly clear. Of course, if there is much more fluid in the system than in the resevoir, these numbers change, but the withdrawn fluid should be somewhat lighter. I don't mind spending a little money on a couple quarts of Valvoline synthetic PS fluid as I'm doing track days and Chevy is concerned enough about PS fluid that they put in a cooler.
Service manual for 2004 coupe lists 1.7 pints fluid.
If you have a power steering cooler, comes on z51 option, it would be more.
Sounds like you are sucking lots of fluid!
