Seriously 3.73s are great, however I would not want to go any bigger if you do alot of highway driving. My car is at 2350 RPM @ 70 MPH. If you do alot of 80+ MPH driving you might be better off with 3.42s
I agree with blktie8 when he said, It's all a compromise. It just depends on what you want to do. What is streetable for one is not streetable for another. I went from 3.42 to 3.90 and picked up alot at the track but I and also gained 400 rpms on the highway. The car is louder on the highway and the mileage suffered (3 mpg) but I would rather run fast at the track. So it was worthwhile for me to do.
I have a 3.73 with an A4 and Yank SY3500. On very long trips it is a little annoying. The RPMs are a little bit higher, exhaust is louder, tranny runs a bit warmer, and the mpg goes down. Around town it is a bunch of fun, though.
For you guys with A4 cars that went with 3.73 gears, do you have any regrets? Especially at highway speeds like 70 mph or so?
:
No Regrets- RPM's slighly higher but if you are like me once I checked the other cars at home there is little to no difference in some of my other factory cars RPM to speed ratio and my vette with 3.73
It is all about what you want and how you drive it. Around town it will be much quicker. Stall helps as well and if you are even considering that is the time to do it.
I had 3.42's installed this past summer, but with my SS3600 T/C.... I think around town I would have perfered 3.73's?? I love this setup at the track and the highway is a non-issue for me, but around town perhaps are 2600 - 3000 t/c would have been better.
