Default Throttle Body Coolant Bypass - Good Mod. ?

Need Help.....Is installing a Throttle Body Coolant Bypass a worth while Mod. - I mean is it worth the $9.00 and 20-30 minutes labor....Sounds to good to be true....$9.00 and 30 minutes for 6-8 H.P. Any advise from the wise H.P. expert Forum Members would be much appreciated....Thanks John

It is a good thing but not worth 6>8 hp. Maybe a couple on a hot day. You can make one for about for a few $ from a Home Depot hose coupler. All you are doing is running the coolant by, instead of thru the TB.

If you live in cold climates like me, it is not a good idea. Ice can form on the throttle plate. Maybe .8 hp not 8.

It is waste of time and effort...my opinion that also I have seen shared by others over the years. Especially at 19.00 for a hose coupling and a couple hose clamps.

Don't waste your time. any air flowing through the throttle body is only there a micro second... and at ten cubic feet of air a second, do you really think you're are going to change the temperature of that ten cubic feet by 1 degree?? it is in the airbox at ambient... and it's in the throttle body at ambient... removing the coolant line which runs at 190 to 200 F., will drop the temperature to the external motor temp by convection.. the throttle body might get down to 160, but in order to get 1.3 hp gain from denser air you need to drop the temperature by of the incoming air 10 degrees.. if the outside air is 90 degrees as it enters the throttle body, the convection temperature at 160 will not make that 90 degree ambient air any cooler.. also with the coolant line connected to the throttle body and it running at 190/200... the ambient air which gets sucked in a ten cubic feet a second will not increase the temperature either.,..
here's some proof.. on a cold day, your 190 throttle body will not effect the 20 degree ambient air temp... I think anyone can feel the difference in how their car runs when it's 20 out as oppose to 90... that difference is about ten horse power.. and can be felt . The heated throttle body has no effect on that 10 hp increase... because the air isn't there long enough to get heated up...

There must be some gain, no matter what. It may be miniscule, but there is some. In any case, it can't hurt.

Does anyone here take issue with some of the BS horsepower claims by the aftermarket manufacturers? 6-8 hp from a bypass...gimme a break. If I listened to everything that was published in the catalogs, I could get 50 more hp for 500 bucks!

If the HP claims were true, the "R" sticker has about 30 HP

Call me ignorant.. the "R" sticker?

I did the coolant bypass on my last vette, a 93 vert, didn't see anything on the dyno. nothing.

R is for Ricer, as in stickers and gaudy body panels and wings and coffee can blatty exhaust found in ***'tuner' cars.

In cold weather the throttle plate may freeze from H2O Vapor condensation and then the whole mess comes to a stop. I experienced this once in a friends carburated Opel back in the 70s...Had to park until the engine heat melted the ice build up before it would start again.

So, in some circumstances, it CAN hurt, why waste your time. Save up for a Hallteck Stinger or Variram intake and do some real measurable good.

Or do the bypass..... heck its YOUR car, but you got the advice from the forum now, so its up to you. Good luck, let us know what you do and if you feel any HP if you do it.

BEFORE the bypass, after a 20 minute drive, I felt the top of the TB, and it was RED HOT. Couldn't keep my hand on it!

AFTER the bypass was done, I drove another 20 minutes, felt the TB, and it was COOL!

You deceide..

i posted a rant about that a few months ago. Anyone promising you more than 1hp for less than 10 min. work and $20 is full of $#^. It really pisses me off that vendors will sell this stuff. Anything to make a buck.

You can get the parts ( 2 little clamps, male-male connector and 3 feet of hose) at the local parts store for 5-6 dollars.
Its a theory thing, rather than a noticible gain. All out race car, you may notice a gain when the car is raced all day and hot. The rest of the cars with a couple of modifications, I doubt you'll notice it, but its easy enough to do.
