Default brake sticking!!!

thought that it was just my brake light that was sticking, but it seems as if the pedal itself is actually sticking a little (enough to keep the brake light on) i actually have to lift the brake pedal up slightly after breaking so the light will go out. doesnt seem like the brakes are actually engaged still.

anybody have this happen? any solutions? im a DIY kinda guy, but is this something that i should just have checked out? someone mentioned it might be a problem with the master cylinder? is this possible? i bled the system about a week ago, but still the same problem.

any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!

1. How much do you need to pull the pedal back?

2. Does it happen all the time? Or after you've used the brakes awhile?

3. Turn the car on, rev the motor a bit and then shut it off. Hit the brake pedal once. Does it still stick? Apply again and see if it sticks.

4. Turn on the car, rev the motor a bit and then shut it off. Apply the brakes until the pedal becomes hard, 2-3 times probably. Does it still stick?

It sounds like you have a minor (?) case of self-actuation, since you aren't experiencing any brake drag at the corners.

This can be caused by:

- A bad brake booster that's not equalizing after you release the brakes.
- A bad booster where the valve is either sticking or the return spring is failing.
- A worn bushing or return spring in the brake pedal assembly
- The brake pedal bracket is lose or damaged

The simplest and quickest:

Check the pedal assembly see if it has a lot of play in it or if you can hear any clunking sounds, after the brake pedal is hard.

Is the booster input rod (attached to the pedal) nice and straight and is it firmly mounted to the pedal pin?

Is the booster itself firmly mounted to the engine side dash (firewall)?

Not likely the master cylinder:

If it was the master cylinder the pedal would still return because the booster out-put rod is not physically attached to the master cylinder piston. You would just have a lot more dead space before the brakes applied.

my only problem is that is doesnt "stick" that much. most of the time its hardly noticable. but it is just enough to keep the brake lights on. but it doesnt do it all the time. i doubt id be able to show the problem to the dealer because it only happens here and there. sometimes the pedal comes up fine.

This sounds familiar, problem is that the public TSB never give you the details, you'll need a tech with access to the whole TSB:

TSB

Make : CHEVROLET Model : CORVETTE Year : 2001
Manufacturer : GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

Service Bulletin Num : 010522002
Date of Bulletin: APR 01, 2001
NHTSA Item Number: 619381

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:PEDALS AND LINKAGES

Summary:
SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT THAT AFTER THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED, THE BRAKES APPEAR TO REMAIN PARTIALLY APPLIED (LIGHT BRAKE DRAG) AND / OR THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS REMAIN ILLUMINATED. *TT
Owner Compliant

Make : CHEVROLET Model : CORVETTE Year : 2001
Manufacturer : GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

ODI ID Number : 735546
Date of Failure: October 18, 2000
VIN : 1G1YY22G215...

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM

Summary:
BRAKES DO NOT FULLY RELEASE. WHEN BRAKES APPLIED AND REPLEASED, THEY STUCK AND CONTINUED TO BRAKE. DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED PROBLEM, BUT WILL NOT REPLACE BRAKE BOOSTER WHICH SEEMED TO BE CULPRIT BECAUSE IT APPEARED TO BE OPERATIONAL TO SPEC.*AK
